As a group of 5 Canadians we wanted to experience the local sights and culture, however with limited spanish, amongst us we know the numbers to nine, can order beer, find a bano and greet people. Through a local contact we were introduced to Avi, we spent the day with him and his assistant Axel. As natives of the area, the boys were able to assist us on our day trip from Barra de Potosi. We had a 15 and 17 year old in our group and thought it would be a great experience for them to use the local transportation. On Avi's suggestion we ventured to Ixapta via the local transportation to Playa Linda Beach area, where there is a turtle, crocodiles and iguana refuge, this was pretty cool! We were able to feed the iguana's which was a neat experience. From there we toured back to Zihuatanejo to shop at the markets, they took us to the tourist markets as well as the local markets, this was interesting to experience! We checked out the bay and the boys explained the fishing boats as well as other interesting local facts. The day was a great experience overall! Avi's english is very good, it was a great learning for all of us, and the teenagers, our two and Axel, got to experience some cross training on english and spanish..... We would highly recommend Avi as a tour guide!

We had a tour of the lagoon with Avi. What a beautiful and exciting morning. Avi takes you in his boat to the mangroves. We learned, and got to try our skills at throwing fishing nets and catching crabs. Avi knows the wildlife and the birds seem to know him. Afterwards we spent time on the expansive beach which is a gem

Arrived at the beach location at the entrance to the Lagoon, with a warm welcome from Avi our tour guide who is very knowledgeable of the area and Eco-sensitive. The mangroves along the lagoon are home to many various bird species and fish. The tour was the highlight of our birding in the area and Avi is an excellent guide. We would highly recommend him for a two hour tour or all day trip in the Barra de Potosi Mexico area!

We first went to Barra de Potosi in January and were blown away by the remarkable bird viewing.
We took a taxi from Zihua and our driver knew one of the guides at the lagoon who took us out in his panga into the mangrove lined beautiful lagoon. At every turn there was another fabulous bird sighting. We saw birds perching in the trees as well as diving for fish. There was a line half submerged wooden poles at the sight of a fromer shrimp farm where a frigate sat atop of each post.We were able to see how to easily distinguish males from females and mature from immature frigates. We saw roseate spoonbills flying overhead while snake birds (hinges), pelicans, green herons, and
giant white egrets sunned themselves in the tree brances below. There were kingfishers, ibis, wood storks, new born turkey vultures, and an amazing variety of shorebirds almost everywehre we looked. We never wanted out lagoon adventure to end.
When we returned last month over the Thanksgiving holiday, we didn't want to miss going back to the lagoon. This time whe hired a guide- Javier (the very best birding guide ever- more about him in another review later) and we drove to the lagoon by way of several other birding sites and along the 15 mile unspoiled stretch of beach separating it from Zihua. We were so entranced by all the sights on the way that we almost forgot about our planned destination. Again we got on a panga and headed out into the lagoon. There were many fewer birds this time- reminding me (of course) that different seasons produce different opportunities to see wildlife and that some months are more spectacular than others for birding as the birds migrate (duh!). Nevertheless, despite there being fewer birds inhabiting the lagoons waters, we did see birds we hadn't seen on our first visit and, in the end, it was a remarkable experience in it's own way and in now way a disappointment. It only made me want to come back again adn again to discover and view all of the different migrating birds. As Javier told us, every time he goes there he sees different wildlife species and he always looks forward to the adventure and opportunity of discovery. We look forward to our next visit to this fabulous sanctuary.

We had a great day with Avi. We toured the rocks at Barra, fished and saw the sights. Avi speaks excellent English and knows the area well. Saw dome dolphins and even caught a fish. Next year we will do lagoon with Avi. Spent a few weeks in this area, its great!
