“Relaxing & Invigorating”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 18, 2014

The picturesque drive north of Christchurch is made worth while when you taste the delicious wine.
We book a table at the end of the school holidays and relax with a lovely lunch and wonderful Rose, Chardonay or Pino noir. We love the scenery and the friendliness of the staff. Our children who live in Auckland love coming down and going there with us.

“Excellent”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 24, 2014

It is about an hour North of Christchurch and you should book ahead. We came because friends had recomended it but we were a bit nervous after some of the reviews.
It's not, and doesn't claim to be, a budget eat. Nor is it over the top. Canterbury is probably the most expensive region to dine in NZ. Thir wine is not mass produced, but low volume.
On our arrival we were encouraged to taste (no charge) before purchasing with our meal. Wipara Reisling are tops, and the Black Estate version was amung the best. The Pinot Noir was "far from shabby".

The menu contained interesting choices. However It was impossible not to notice the venison tower going past. It looked fantastic, like someting straight out of a glossy magazine. 3 of the 4 of us had it. It tasted even better than it looked. It was absolutely superb. We did not order additional sides and they were not needed. The "odd one out" found his chicken dish equally exciting. The only minor dissapointment was the lack of a df/gf desert.

While the food is excellent, you come here for an overall experience. We visited on a sunny autuum day and were able to sit on the side of the hill, with the haze over the valley. It was quite sureal. Don't plan on working hard or mowing the lawns afterwards as you will be looking for a great book, another bottle or wine or just sitting around laughing with friends

“Small scale wine making and restaurant with a view”

A lot of thought and love has gone in to this beautifully set wine shop and restaurant. Book a table in advance to enjoy a formidable lunch with stunning views over the vineyard in a very relaxing atmosphere.

“A wonderful way to spend time”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 1, 2014

The moment we drove in & caught a view of the restaurant we were impressed! We went with family from Australia & we were all very impressed with Black Estate. Perched on a hill overlooking the vineyard with an amazing view. Loved the architecture & decor & how the sides of the restaurant can open right up. The fact we went on a warm sunny day was a bonus! .
The reception from the moment we walked in was excellent. I recommend the wine tasting - very interesting & allows the right choice for later! Loved the Reisling but chose the Rose for lunch which was really refreshing. Now for the food ...it was superb!! I'm not sure what else to say as it might not do it justice. At our table we had the pork belly & venison dishes - melt in the mouth!! Wonderfully presented & totally adequate portion sizes (2 males in our group)
I am already thinking when we can go back! I most definitely recommend!
