Owner description: On State Highway 1, set amongst the vines is the iconic stone building that is home to Waipara Hills. Here you'll discover an operating winery, cellar door and seasonal cafe. Just 45 minutes drive north of Christchurch.

My partner and I went to the Mud House as it was near where we were staying. It was a busy Saturday afternoon but the service we got was great from a friendly and knowledgeable waitress. The food was mixed, a great seafood chowder as one of the starters but a bland Roast Salmon main. The thing that caught our eye was the platter to share. We decided that we liked where we stayed and that on the way back up towards Picton we would cut across and treat ourselves to a nice bottle of wine and a platter at the mud house. It seems the good staff only work at the weekends. Dismissive and bored looking staff who didn't offer the wine menu and a pared down menu of about five items made for an uncomfortable twenty five minutes.

Had breakfast in restaurant, then did wine tour and tasting. With only 4 of us on the tour it was personal service. The wine was very good and several bottles as well as purchases from the gift store went home with us.

Great food and a very warm welcome from Jenny and her team. We had a mixed starter platter of cold cut hams, cheeses etc then a venison stack. Wonderful food (and of course wine), room for the kids to run around, seating indoors and out depending on the weather and some seriously knowledgable staff (ask for Dennis :-)
Thanks to all. We'll be back!

Great wines and wine tasting experience. The staff are friendly and knowledgable and the scenery is fantastic. The staff were very helpful with the opening times for other wine tasings as we arrived late in the day.
