We stayed in a 8 bed dorm for 3 nights. On check in there had been a power cut and the generator for the whole village had gone down. Fair enough, we stumbled to our room in the dark and hoped that at some point heating would return to the building.

The heater in our room was an electric heater with a timed button that stopped after about 2 minutes - others around the hostel did seem to last longer. This meant that our room never really heated up properly and it was alway a bit cold.

We had bad weather one day so spent our time reading in the common area. We requested the fire be out on as it was freezing cold but were told not until 3pm. This seems a bit strange. I understand if no one is in the room and using it but instead I sat wrapped in hat and scarf and was still cold!

Showers and bathrooms seemed pretty clean, as was the kitchen. Although the kitchen was fairly small for the amount of people trying to cook in there sometimes.

Would still recommend to stay here as the location is just amazing.

I stayed a couple of nights in an 8 bed dorm. I arrived early but was unable to check-in until around 2pm.

Hostel was very clean and the showers were always hot which was perfect after a long day's hiking. Kitchen and lounge area were fairly small for the number of beds though and were always too busy.

Comfortable beds but would be nice to have a power socket by each bunk. There were only a couple of power sockets available in the lounge area too.

Ample parking and nice location on the edge of Mt Cook village. There is little choice for accommodation at Mt Cook, but I'd have no problems staying here again.

it's a two-storey wooden house in Mt Cook Valley. The living room and kichen were warm, clean and the staff were friendly. We were in room with 1 double bed and 1 single bed, it's clean, but the room was a bit cold when it's snowing. The price was reasonable considering the location in Mt Cook valley.

ps. Mt Cook it's a wonderful place, it's a pity that we can't go mountain climbing bcz snowing. Will go again in next journey.

As there are limited accomodation options in Mt. Cook, you won't be surprised by the price of a bunk bed either you chose YHA Mt. Cook or the other backpacker.

The YHA here corresponds to the average YHA standards with clean rooms, nice and spacious lounge areas, sauna, well-equipped kitchen, large dining area, etc. Others mention the rude staff, but we didn't have any problems with them: they were friendly, helpful and had a good knowing of local hiking options, etc.

We slept in 8-bed dorm, and slept well, the beds were okay. And yes, you will have to bring your linen back, but that was not a big deal for us.

As mentioned, the prices shouldn't be that high for this standard, but the stunning location well worth paying the extra.

The beds were so comfortable! Love the whole concept of the cozy wooden cabin dorms. Rooms and all sharing facilities were extremely clean. Staff were really knowledgeble and the hostel has every information (maps, tours, etc) that one needs. Best of all was that we do get a pretty decent view of Mount Cook from our dorm's window. There is nothing more I could ask from a backpacker hostel!

Great hostel. Small and cosy, without being overcrowded. Although I was in an 8 share dorm, there was still plenty of space. Great kitchen and bathroom facilities. Lots of information and very friendly staff to help with 'what to do'. Great location too!
