Great info centre of the great Southern Alps, You can book tours, Huts, accommodation and ask the friendly staff about anything of this ever changing region. Has a great exhibition of the history and explorers and the gear they used.

“Nice place”
Reviewed September 9, 2013

The visitor centre was very nice and clean. There was lots to look at and learn about the area. They have a gift shop where I bought some nice gloves for my walks. Watch out for the ice in the parking lot during winter! haha

Modern set-up of a great little exhibition - informative displays on both the region's early history and the later explorers.Interesting early maps and old gear. Extremely friendly staff.

“Like Aladdin's Cave”
Reviewed July 30, 2013

There are so many aspects I could praise: the architecture of the actual building, the quality of the different display, in information and how it is presented, the artwork, paintings, photographs, sculptures, stoneglass windows, the list goes on. The best DOC Visitor Centre ever.

“A must see in Mt Cook”
Reviewed July 30, 2013

I agree with everything below - this is a top notch DOC centre (and I've been to a few!) with lots of fascinating displays covering the history of Mount Cook (incredible photos of early climbers - I particularly liked the female party from the 1920's, complete with icicles on their faces and lovely climbing frocks). The landscaped area outside has an early hut you can look through - gives a real sense of what our early mountaineers endured.
Lovely staff too - some DOC centres can feel a bit unfriendly, this is not one of them. You'll spend an hour here easily and come away having learned a few things.
