We stayed here for 2 nights in one of the motel rooms. The room was nice and big and had decent views. Unfortunately the walls were pretty thin, so it could be a bit loud depending on your neighbors. We also had to drive to the main hotel for pretty much any services. The continental breakfast was included with our room, which was good because the room was pretty pricey, one of the most expensive during our trip, but one of the cheapest on the property. Food here was pretty expensive, but I guess that is understandable given the remote location. If I had to do it over, I would probably only stay here one night. We had really bad weather almost the entire two days and it got pretty boring, given we mainly went there to hike and do outdoor activities.

The room we stayed in was a 'standard' room. The room was a bit dated but had everything you need. It did however have the most amazing view to Mount Cook and a terrace area outside to sit and enjoy the view.
The food in the hotel is pretty good, we ate in the buffet restaurant for both breakfast and dinner and there is a huge choice of food.
Don't go here expecting a bargain - it is a pretty remote hotel so it is expensive. Don't let that put you off though as it really is in the most beautiful setting. We done a lot of walking when we stayed and it was so nice to be able to do all this straight from the hotel.

After reading the variability of reviews on Trip Advisor I was hesitant to stay at the Hermitage, but all in all we were pleasantly surprised. We stayed in the Aoraki Wing which has a great view of Mt. Cook, although the second day was cloudy we had a good view of Mt. Cook with the moon next to the mountain the day we arrived. The room itself is nice, you pay for the view. The dinner and breakfast was included and was surprisingly good. We had a four course meal and buffet breakfast. There were lots of tour buses but everything was run efficiently without the feeling of being herded.

This hotel was excellent. Great views of Mount Cook.
The buffet dinner gave an essence of Kiwi food with Aokari Salmon and Mussels.

Probably the only option in town. We would describe it as a three star hotel with eight star views. The hotel’s only real concern was to push people through with as little trouble to themselves as possible. Mostly the staff’s only objective was to make sure they had your room number right so that they could charge you. Lots of tour busses. While we were there they had 5 coach loads in and this completely swamped the dining room at breakfast and dinner, neither of which were particularly pleasant experiences.

Dear Carianmac,

Thanks for your review of The Hermitage. There are a number of different styles of accommodation at The Hermitage ranging from motel units to 5 star Premium Plus rooms. So there are options for all budgets. Another piece of advice to future guests is to book the Panorama Restaurant to avoid any large groups of guests. It is a much more intimate dining experience with world class food and service.

Thanks again,

Andrew Cleverley
