We will never stay here again. Ever.

We are a family of 5 and we booked three rooms for two nights. First, they "upgrade" us from the superior rooms that we booked (we wanted balconies) to premium rooms (no balcony) and they put us on the lowest floor facing the car park. I went to reception to ask for the superior rooms instead and they inform me that all the superior rooms are taken. So the Assistant Front Desk Manager tells me that he will put us on a much higher floor and that I should take the rooms because they are really nice and cost more than $360 per room per night which is much more than what I paid for. Who do they hire to run front desk?

The rooms are dated and poor-maintained. Bathroom tiles chipped, rusty drain cover, old shower curtains, dirty carpets and sofas.

My biggest gripe is the food. If you eat at the Panorama Room, you MUST order a main and a starter or a dessert. That comes up to about $60 to $70 a person, depending on what you order. If you eat at the Alpine Restaurant, you pay $67 for a buffet dinner and $32 for breakfast. In short, for a family of 4, you have to pay at least $250 for dinner and $130 for breakfast. That is what we paid for dining at very nice restaurants in Auckland and Christchurch. For those prices, you'd expect that food would at least be decent but food quality was subpar and the dishes old-fashioned.

Over and above the room rates, we incurred incidental charges (food and Big Sky Stargazing for 2) of $900.

I did not leave a happy guest.

We stayed here in early May to see the world famous New Zealand mountains. WOW! What a view! The Hermitage Hotel was a wonderful place to stay and offered comfy rooms and great customer service. There is also a great little cafe in the hotel to grab lunch at. Our room was requested to have a view, and it did not disappoint. Our room had sliding glass doors that led out to a patio where you can sit and take in the views of Mount Cook. Definitely a great place to say in this super cute, remote village.

Room tip: Request rooms with a view of Mount Cook.

We stayed here at the very end of May 2019. We only stayed for 1 night on our way around the sth island. It was just a fabulous place to spend time. We arrived at midday and did a hike before checking into the hotel. We had booked a room which was in one of the wings with the views of the mountains. The view was just amazing. The beds were super comfortable, and i think the price for where this hotel is, and the view that it offers is very fair.
After checking in and changing out of our hiking clothes, we headed down to the bar to have drinks during happy hour - great value, and a great place to spend some time looking out over the view. We then were able to catch the shuttle bus to the sister property to have dinner down there - great value pub fare. when we had finished eating our dinner, we headed back to the abr again at the hermatige and had cocktails before heading into bed. The beds were very comfortable and the linen was nice. the only thing that wasnt spectacular was the water pressure in the shower. it was quite hard to get warm in there - but i dont really think that matters when we were only staying for 1 night. I would definitely return again. it was very conveniently located for all the hikes, and parking was easy also. thank you.

Upon realizing that I left my pair of diamond earrings at The Hermitage (we've already checked out and was on the road), I gave the hotel a call and they immediately sent a staff member to check the room we stayed at.

Credit goes to Ms. Sekoula Ulullakeba of the Front Desk Team for going above and beyond the call of duty. She couriered back my earrings the same day to the address I provided.

I am truly grateful for the effort and appreciative of the care they have shown their guests.

Kudos to The Hermitage!

For such a historical and major hotel, one might have expected more from the standard rooms. The staff are very professional, friendly and helpful though and provide a high standard of service. Mt Cook Village is an odd place which is pretty much centered around and controlled by the Hermitage. It's almost like a resort where you spend all your time there. The restaurants are pricey, but you have no choice. The hotel is attached to to the only real attraction in the area, the Hillary Museum and the only Stargazing option is through the hotel. There are plenty of walking trails, but at the time of the year I visited only one was open and it was quite icy. I think the location might have made up for any deficiencies of the hotel at a different time of year.
