The Hermitage Hotel
Reviewed February 13, 2009

We stayed at one of the chalets which had excellent views, however, the chalet that we got was difficult to access, especially at night with poor lights. Probably the only decent hotel around the area and recommended for those wanting to take a break in driving. Good to explore the area including Tasman Glacier. The museum and planetarium were reasonable.

I have travelled the world and this is one of the most stunning locations I have ever stayed in. Our room was a bit dated but adequate and because of the wonderful view of the mountains it didn't matter in the least. We were lucky enough for the clouds to clear on our first evening so it was convenient enough to shoot off in the car and then take a small walk up a rocky outlook to the glacier. This was fantastic but the next day was even better, exciting helicopter ride (with landing in the snow) is highly recommended, glacier lake boat trip in the afternoon also highly recommended. The activities at the hotel are worth a look if you have time. I was a little disappointed by the buffet food although my husband and son were happy with it. I would not recommend the Mountaineers Cafe in the village as we had a really tasteless thrown-together so called organic-based meal there. My husband said it was the worst steak he had ever eaten! Overall fantastic place to spend a couple of nights though and soak up the scenery. I don't think there is much choice of other hotels in the village anyway.

We stayed in the new wing of the hotel in a premium view room for two nights in early January. We were on a motorhome trip so it was time for real showers and it was a great base for exploring Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park (we did some great walks and a helicopter scenic tour while there). The room was your basic hotel room, I guess slightly larger with two queen beds and a small sofa/coffee table setup. Quite sufficient for our needs but the rooms are nothing to rave about - clean, standard, hotel rooms. I was surprised when I was told the hotel didn't have bathrobes as I'm used to this being pretty standard. Also they don't do room service, but after having a very good meal in the a la carte restaurant on the first night, they kindly cooked meals for us in this restaurant kitchen the second night and I picked them up to take them back to our room. A word on the restaurant - the food is really excellent (french style with top NZ ingredients) but the service is pretty average. Not awful, not rude - just not matching the very good food and elegant surroundings (with obligatory views of the mountain).
HOWEVER, having said that the rooms are pretty standard, when you have your curtains open and you're looking across to the magnificent Aoraki-Mt Cook, drinking in the postcard view through your big picture. The hotel has a good buzz about it with the Edmund Hillary Centre, people coming and going from walks, the mountain being ever-present, people taking photos of the mountain everywhere you go, etc. The hotel also has some great history with being one of, or the oldest, hotels in New Zealand. The drive in is also stunning along Lake Pukaki.

We stayed in the motels section of the Hermitage Hotel in Mt Cook - a short five minute walk away from the main hotel. Our studio style apartment has a fabulous view of the mountain, was clean and well equipped with a large bathroom. All in all a nice stay somewhere where choices are limited.

We ate in the hotel restaurant at a table with a spectacular view of Mount Cook and watched the sun set, food was excellent.

We recently stayed two nights at the Hermitage in the newer Aoraki wing. Our room on the seventh floor was pleasant, clean and comfortable with simply spectacular views of Mt Cook. Our main reason for staying at Aoraki/Mt Cook was to be able to take a helicopter ride with a glacier landing which we were fortunately able to do. Flights often don't go ahead because of poor weather conditions. However the drive up to Aoraki/Mt Cook along Lake Pukaki has some of the best scenery anywhere in the world and would have made the trip worthwhile on its own. There are also nice walks to do in the National Park from the hotel.

As others have said, there are not a lot of dining options at Mt Cook and as we were travelling with a child we opted for the hotel's buffet breakfast and dinner. The buffet in the Alpine Restaurant was alright but not outstanding but really the view has to be one of the best of any restuarant in the world. Because of the large number of Japanese travellers who stay at the hotel, the buffet also provides various Japanese influenced dishes.

We found the staff friendly and helpful, particularly those at the Activities Desk who happily rescheduled a glacier explorers boat trip for us when we found out that there was going to be a helicopter flight available on the same morning.

The Hermitage isn't really a five-star hotel but it's in a five-star location and that's what you pay for.

We stayed at the Aaroki wing of this hotel and I had requested a higher floor and got exactly per my request. I couldnt be happier with the reception and check in.
We booked the Luxury Room and the view was fanstastic - right of thge Mt Cook. The drive to the hotel is even better - worth every bit of it.
The only -ve about this place is that since this is the only hotel in the village, there arent too many things to do around here. The hotel has a few restaurants whuich are steeply priced. Food is good though.
I would be happier had the hotel had a pool or a good sauna/jacuzzi facility. It did have a sauna facility bvut looked very outdated and crapy. But for the views and for those who would like taking a boat ride to the glacier - this place is a must visit.

The location of this hotel is amazing. The food in the a la carte restaurant is also excellent. The room was not bad either - although it was next to the laundry and not sound-proof. But there it stops. The service is absolutely appalling, it starts with a reception that could not be less interested, it continues with the service in the restaurant that managed to utilise every opportunity to embarrass itself in terms of poor service and attention and finished with the 'breakfast'. Have never eaten a more disgusting ensemble of cold and evil-tasting ingredients. If you ever stay there, save on breakfast and arrive with some cereal bars instead (or just stay in Twizel and drive for an hour each way). In contrast to all other accommodation experiences across New Zealand, this is a shameless money-grabbing place that exploits the masses of bus-tourists and individual travellers alike.
