“Villa 009 or 010 awesome view of mount Sefton and mount cook”
Reviewed February 13, 2014 via mobile

We stayed in villa 009 and the window view was filled with mount Sefton and mount Cook .February 10th and ice covered peaks. Certainly can recommend the buffet.$62pp , beautiful food. Don't go if you don't want to over eat, but if you plan on doing the hiking trails ( kiwi term" tramping") then you will burn that off on hooker valley walking trail no problem. The room was self contained and had 1x double and 2x singles. Everything you needed , but if you want luxury then stay in the main part of the hotel.

An expensive hotel in a very beautiful setting. We stayed in one of the motel rooms, 15 minutes from the main building, the room was fine with beautiful views of the mountain from the rear where there was a bench. A superb shower, excellent towels, heating plus a table and sofa. The kitchen equipment was fine except there was no cafetiere.
Breakfast was included and we didn't upgrade to full so it was just continental. The continent appeared to be Europe disappointingly. It was poor. The juices were weak and poor quality, there were stewed fruits out of the fifties, the bread was cheap sliced stuff and the bagels were bagel shaped but tasted like a bread roll. There were no pastries or croissants even though they were advertised. There were cheap slices of processed cheese and bottom grade ham and some salad fixings. The coffee was passable.
We aTe buffet dinner for £30 for the 2 nights of our stay. Exactly the same food both nights. It was better than breakfast but overpriced. The starters were First class and I ate 2 full plates. The mains were unimaginative; the lamb was way over cooked, the tandoori chicken had never seen a tandoor only ersatz tandoori flavouring. But it was the deserts that took the cake - they were made by a cardboard manufacturer not a pastry chef. My conclusion: stay in a motel unit but bring your own food like our sensible neighbours did

We had read very mixed reviews (tourist trap; terrible food).

We had an excellent visit due to:
1. Sunny clear weather
2. Two fabulous rooms on the top floor; one with a balcony
3. Knowledge ahead to book dinner in the restaurant - not the buffet.

A very nice property in a great location. And I believe there is only one other lodging in the area.

Plan ahead - except you can't factor the weather - and enjoy a stop in this part on NZ. The buffet for breakfast is decent.

Please note that there are bus loads here at all times.

The Hermitage is a very large hotel well set up to accommodate a large number of people. In fact, it seemed more like a mini ski resort than a hotel. The outdoor deck is perfectly suited to your lunch from the canteen style cafe, where you can soak up some sun. The main dining restaurant offers buffet style dining. There is also a small shop where you can buy supplies and snacks for your day trips.

The rooms are well maintained, clean and fairly modern. We had a lovely deck overlooking the mountain - definitely the best of the rooms options (although, for some reason it seems the more expensive rooms didn't have decks, so be aware of this). Wifi, as usual, was only available through a purchase option. Other amenities included binoculars available for use in the room and heated towel racks - definitely necessary in the cold weather.

This hotel is literally all about experiencing the views of Aoraki Mt. Cook, its neighboring mountains, and the Tasman Valley. It is the only hotel in town (for outside visitors) and is clean and nicely furnished. Not luxury, but very very acceptable as this is the perfect venue to experience the Mountain. Very nice walking trails surround the hotel -- this is the hub of tourism in the area.

Each room has a view of the mountains - ours (on 8th floor of the taller building) looked straight onto Mt. Cook - fantastic views day and night (until the fog rolled in). There are viewing balconies off the lobbies - but not off of the second taller building - but that did not bother or detract from the viewing experience. Nice outfitting shop in lobby (with tour desk) and very good bar (well priced drinks and, again "massive" views). Very friendly staff, and the place is impeccably clean. Rooms were quiet and nicely furnished. Breakfast buffet was mobbed but a good value. Dinner Offerings in the Hermitage Restaurant (room off the main breakfast buffet venue) was exceptional. Nice wine offerings too.

Room Tip: If you must have a balcony, opt for rooms in the main (3-4 story building in front); but the second...

We had an excellent stay at The Hermitage. Very good room with fantastic views over the mountains and in a superb location for the Tasman glacier. High standard of cleanliness throughout the hotel. Meals provided a wide range to suit all tastes.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the mountains and preferably on a high floor. The views are spectacular.

I suspect like others, we expected to be ever so slightly ripped off here as it is, to coin a phrase, a long way from the middle of nowhere! However, this is a good business, the room was slightly on the small side compared to hotels elsewhere but perfectly acceptable, the food, both dinner and the breakfast buffet, was reasonably priced and good quality. All in all a pleasant surprise.

Hold your nerve for the views, and I hope you get lucky, we did right up to the last morning when you would have had no idea that Mount Cook was there!

Overall, my thanks for a good visitor experience that exceeded my somewhat cynical expectations.
