The Hermitage Hotel
Reviewed January 24, 2014

Since this is a near monopoly resort I expected to be exploited - but I realy enjoyed it. The hotel is in a stunning setting, and the snow on Mount Sefton gleams through almost each window in the public areas and most rooms seem to have a view of at least one mountain. There are plenty of organised tour options but self-guided tours are easy along well marked tracks. The rooms are clean and well fitted but more akin to motel standards than main hotels. The breakfast (though a bit steep at $38) is an excellent buffet choice in a brilliant setting. The Old Mountain hut cafe (not part of the hotel) just down the slope is better value for general eating.

Dear Rosevear99

I am pleased that you found our hotel to be so good and in fact exceeding your expectations. I would like to correct just one point the Breakfast Buffet which you commented was very good is in fact $29 including tax and not as you state $38 - the net price is therefore $25 and as you correctly mentioned offers a very good choice of items.

The Mt Cook area does offer a variety of activities for the guests to enjoy both inside and outside the hotel. The good weather is always welcome and being in the mountains is not always a guaranteed thing - but mostly good.

We were undecided about whether we wanted to stay at Mount Cook or do a day trip. Very glad we choose to stay. Hotel was very good with comfortable bed, warm room and very clean. The views and night sky were spectacular and we enjoyed all the day walks. It was lovely and quiet in the evening after all the buses had gone and we felt privileged to be there. Staff friendly and were happy to talk to us about what to do.

Room Tip: Ask for a view facing north otherwise would not be as good.

Dear Hoffog

it was very good of you to take the time to post your comment. I feel that from your comments you are referring to the Star Gazing activity only and not about the hotel at all.

Star Gazing is a special interest activity and is well appreciated by our guest as evidenced by the amazing increase in the attendance this year over last and in fact over these past two years. We are especially pleased that our area has been appointed a World Heritage Dark Sky Reserve by Unesco as there are not too many of them in the world and especially in the Southern Hemisphere.

Happy travels

On arrival we discovered that we had been upgraded to a mountain view room and as the weather was good we were treated to spectacular views of Mt. Cook. Our room wasn't enormous but was clean, comfortable and well equipped and with the upgrade we would certainly wouldn't quibble at the value! The cinema and museum inside the hotel were fascinating, as was the outdoor centre situated in the grounds. We would have loved to have spent more than just the one night as there is so much to do and see and experience. We had the a la carte menu for dinner and the food was excellent, as was the view because the restaurant manager kindly met our request for a mountain view table if at all possible. Breakfast was also excellent and good value. All in all a very memorable twenty four hours for all the right reasons and we hope to return one day.

We stayed at the chalets: practical and comfortable, but... nice view on the parking. The only reason what you come here is the location: how on hearth they constructed the chalets in a way that only two units have 100 % view, and all the others no view at all, is beyond me. The main hotel is a terrifying hugly construction, but made precisely to guarantee every room with proper view.
There are NOT groceries in the is village: if you did not bring your own food, you have two options: a restaurant ( mandatory booking, 65 $ pp++) or a pub. Interestingly enough, at the pub they think they have been upgraded to 5 star restaurant in the center of Paris: they require booking, (in a PUB!!) and if not, even if there are free tables, you'll not be admitted. You can stay outside, but you need to serve yourself... and you can not consume the pub's own food here. You need to leave. I have never seen such great dose on nonsense anywhere in the world... and I did travel to a few places. I wish the management of the pub good luck in their new job: hospitality is not their business. To be fair, the quality of the food ( pub food, of course) was good, and quick. But hospitality and flexibility... ZERO.

A note on the location: well, yes, nice alpine setup. But do not expect anything special if you had the chances to see the Alps, the Himalayas, the Rockies or the Andes...
This is one of those places where you need to come if you are traveling NZ, and this is one of the two hotels available: so take it or leave it. And they know: and it shows: stay as little as you need, check the box, and move on with the rest of your trip.

Room Tip: Chalets: either you are lucky enough to have one of the two lucky units with view, you'll get a...

We honeymooned at The Hermitage for three nights over Christmas. Unfortunately it was pretty cloudy and rainy, so our Mt. Cook view room didn't offer many views of Mt. Cook. However we weren't there to sit in our room all day, and when the skies cleared we were quick to get on the trail!

The Hermitage was kind enough to include a cookbook with our stay, which was a delightful surprise. The Alpine Room buffet was a little ho hum, but the food in the Panorama Room was amazing. Here's a tip: book the Panorama Room as much as you can because it costs about the same as the Alpine Room!

If it wasn't our honeymoon, I'd say one of the other accommodations in the village would suffice. After all, all the good views are on the tracks. But if you want to have something special, luxurious, with great food, and with a great view (even on a moderately cloudy day), this is the place to be.

We stayed at the chalets at The Hermitage. The chalets (except the two in front) unfortunately don't have direct mountain views so make sure you ask for one or stay at the hotel which is more expensive. We stayed here for two days and had a wonderful time. The service is great, the food is fine (must visit the Chamois Bar which has some good beer and bar food selection).

The views from the main restaurant are absolutely breath taking. Pray for good weather so you can not only see the splendid sights of Mount Aoraki but also step out in the night to just look at the night sky. I have never seen so many stars in my life.

The Chalet was quite comfortable for two adults and two kids and heating arrangements are great. You must visit the Edmund Hillary museum and also take a moment to go through the history of the Hermitage hotel.

Room Tip: If you want mountain views make sure you check with the hotel before booking.
