“Amazing view”

Stayed here in Feb 2011 for our baby-moon and it was good experience. The hotel is located far from everything and near to to the glaciers and that makes it special.
The buffet was excellent. The chalet we booked had a kitchen, a small patio with stunning views of snow capped mountains. The hotel arranges the glacier tour and star tour. Our tour ended in 45 minutes due to some weather issues but they gave a full refund even without asking.

We stayed one night in a self contained chalet and were very disappointed. If you are self catering make sure you stock up on food at Twizel or Tekapo as there is very limited and expensive food choices. A highlight was the Panorama Room. Food and service was excellent. Unfortunately service at the bar was poor to non existent. The Hermitage is overpriced and it under delivered on our expectations.

Dear Jenny G

Thank you for posting your review of our hotel complex. It was most dissappointing to see that you felt the Bar service was not adequate and very pleasing to read that you enjoyed both the service and food quality in The Panorama Room. You are correct that there is no real retail food facility at Mt Cook - there use to be but for economic reasons it shut down years ago.
We are at times considered to be expensive although our restuarnt prices are not that different to comparable restaurants elsewhere as i have experienced when dining out. We do have a differect cost structure to other New Zealand hotels aswe operate in a semi remote location and within a National Park. This causes us to provide accommodation for all of our employees in addition to providing them full sustenance which includes power etc We also have to pay a relatively high levy to the government department that controls the National Park in addition to the usual municipal expenses
which influence our pricing protocols. But all good really as New Zealand Tourism is the overall beneficiary.

We stayed 3 days on the 8th floor at The Hermitage. The room was large, well appointed and with absolutely stunning panoramic views of the mountains. We had an end room, so had views in two directions.
The hotel staff were very obliging, with the booking office for walking maps and day trips in the building. The washing facilities were convenient and very good value ($2 a load).
We opted to eat in the a la carte restaurant to avoid the crowds. Not cheap, but good food and service.
Our higlights were snow falling, walking up Hooker Valley and seeing icebergs on the Lake Tasman cruise...unforgetable.
Mt Cook is a magnificent place to visit!

Room Tip: Choose a room in the back building, up high and on the end. You pay more, but the views are amazing.

Thoroughly enjoyed our 2 nights here, wish we could have stayed longer. If you can afford it, upgrade to a room on one of the top floors - they have the best views and slightly better facilities. Who wants to watch TV when you can just sit on the sofa and look out of the window at the most amazing view of Mt Cook and the surrounding mountains. Our room was very spacious and clean. Staff were very friendly and professional. Because there are no shops (other than the one in the lobby) you can just relax and enjoy nature at its best. The Hooker Valley walk is amazing with swing bridges and great views, as are some of the other shorter walks. The only down point would be that the food was expensive - the dinner buffet was definitely better than the panorama room, but other than that we could find no fault.

Staying here for 2 nights was very much an anticipated event as the pictures and prestige put forward on the website had alot to live up to.
We stayed here in a double superior room in the Wakefield Wing of the hotel. The common areas of this wing seem to be abit dated, however the room was nice and has great views.
The movies and planetarium were pretty good, though maybe this should be included in the room price for people staying here?
There are certain things I think a Hotel of this standard should have no matter how eco friendly they are. Those simple things are, individual cakes of soap instead of pump packs, decent water pressure that can fill a bath in the shortest amount of time and electronic carded door keys so you don't have to chase up or decide who is going to have the key!
Other than those points above, this place was great.
It was my daughters 4th birthday when we were there and everyone was most friendly. The cake that was made for here was great. The buffet was one of the best I've eaten at, the food was delicious (it should be at $62NZ).
Check in and out was a breeze, friendly staff.
The man that did the big sky tour on 21 Sep was great and the kids liked him. The lady that showed us to our seats for dinner on 21 Sep was very polite and professional also.
Was there any spa or massage center at this hotel? I didn't see one mentioned at all, It would be a great business opportunity of there isn't one! Maybe a heated pool also?
Would love to come back here one day in the depths of winter to sit around the fire and take in the views for a total relaxation getaway (provided there is a spa) :)

We arrive in the late afternoon in the pouring rain. We came in and were first of all greeted by a warm fire and then the really pleasant staff who quickly checked us in. We had one of the upper floor panorama rooms (it was off season so we got a really good deal!!). The rooms were very comfortable and had an enormous picture window looking onto Mt. Cook (of course it was dark and raining so we couldn't see it then). Our room was in the way back of the hotel but was connected to the main part via a walkway.
The next morning the rain had cleared and we saw the most incredible view - Mt. Cook in all its glory!! Wow!! It was hard to leave the room. We hiked the hooker Valley trail the next day, then came back to the room to relax and enjoy the view. The next day we took the Argo tour (lots of fun!!!).
As for meals - we ate breakfast buffet each morning. Although pricey it was amazing, and filled us up for the entire day (good when you've got teenagers and are going hiking). The first night we went to the panorama room and I was very underwhelmed. The food was expensive, small portions, and really bad service - and the food was not that terriffic either.
The dinner buffet, however, was awesome! The service staff was great and made sure that there was always enough of everything and were much friendlier and came by our table much more than at the panorama room.

Dear Guest

Thank you for taking the time to comment upon your stay. The weather is Changeable at this time of the year - between seasons - but nevertheless the mountains still remain awesome as you experienced.

Apologies for the Panorama Room not living up to its usual standard for you but pleasing to read that the remainder of the hotel with its services was well received.
I hope you had an overall positive time in New Zealand and travelled well back home to California

With a panoramic view to the snow-capped mountains, our room was in a perfect position to enable us to watch the dawn sky turning the snow from pink in the early morning to pale pink then white as the day moved in. Our only gripe was the electric blanket, which had managed to move right across to one side of the bed, making it impossible to use. The staff fixed this on the following day. Overall, though, the staff were friendly and efficient. Our room was within normal walking distance from the main hotel itself, but we used the mini-bus more than once because one of us has an artificial hip and an artificial knee. The mini-bus was prompt, and we found that our driver(s) were also consistently courteous and friendly. The buffet dinners and breakfasts were adequate and plentiful, so no complaints there.
