The Hermitage Hotel
Reviewed June 27, 2013

After having changed our plans due to the recent snow storm, The Hermitage gladly rebooked our family of four. Spoil yourself and get a superior room upstairs in the higher section - we were on the 9th floor. The view is nothing short of spectacular! The dinner there in the fancy restaurant was not really child friendly (but would be awesome for an intimate dinner for two) so caught the complimentary shuttle bus to the backpackers restaurant about 2 minutes away. (Too cold to walk at night). The food, drink, view and atmosphere there is great. The hotel allowed us to borrow toboggans so the kids could zip down the slopes. The drive out there is stunning - a must do in NZ :)

We stay in their Superior room with a breathtaking view of Mt Cook. It snowed on our second day stay there and the view was stunning, oh with a balcony too!!

Room was clean and has daily housekeeping. Nice buffet breakfast (NZ$29 for the full spread).

For the price of NZ$219/night (during the winter season), it is abit on the high side, considering that its hotel attraction prices are not cheap too..like the Sir Edmund Hillary Museum. The paid internet Wi-fi puts the damper on this hotel, given that some motels have free Wi-fi.

We arrived in Winter darkness, along a snow lined road. The greeting at reception was professional, welcoming and warm. Initial impressions strongly influenced by the large roaring fire and the alpine feel of the lobby. Our room on the 4th floor was pretty standard hotel fare, perhaps a little tired but clean and warm with all the necessities. Dined in the Panorama Room restaurant. Wait service was a bit sluggish for an almost empty restaurant but the food made up for the delay in taking our order. I had beef fillet and my partner Aoraki salmon. Both dishes were beautifully presented, cooked to perfection and delicious. The highlight of our stay occurred at daybreak- a magnificent view of Aoraki-Mt Cook from top to bottom. The previous night's storm had vanished leaving clear blue skies, pristine mountains and a snow clad mountain village. Buffet breakfast in the Alpine Room was dominated by spectacular views of the mountain. Your experience of the Hermitage will be strongly influenced by the whether-whether you see the mountain or not! A side trip for a walk up the Tasman Valley is well worth it. There are walks available for all levels of fitness.

I guess if I had to sum up my experience of staying at the Hermitage in one word, it would have to be "WOW" !!!
We drove down to The Hermitage at Mount Cook from Christchurch, the entire drive is senic, with loads n loads of photo opportunities all along. All thru our 4 hour drive I was wondering if the place we were headed for would be any better than everything that we were passing by, n boy was it worth it or what !
This must easily be among the best destination + hotel combinations in the world.
The location is obviously breathtaking, the property is fantastic, the food n service are comparable to the best in the world. What more can one ask for ?
Itz worth every doller u spend on it, period.

We got the bedrooms on offer, at $99/night. It was well worth it. The scenery to wake up to, despite being in the Mount Cook Wing, was fantastic! We read about rooms that didn't have to good a view, but luckily for us the hotel was pretty vacant during our time (June) and yea it was great!

There are very few restaurants around the area but they were great.

The service personnel were very helpful, and were very patient with us.

All in all I would say if you could get it at a good price, its a fantastic experience.

Yes it's expensive but I'm so glad we did it. The views from our room were just amazing and we quickly forgot about the cost. Room was clean, well appointed and warm. Staff were very friendly here, always helpful. We didn't eat here because the cost was prohibitive for our family but took the advice of others and ate at the Mountaineers Café and then for breakfast we stopped in at the Twizel bakery. There is a mini convenience store at the hotel gift shop where you can get things like bread and instant noodles.

Room Tip: If you're going to stay here then get a room with a view of Mount Cook....trust me it's wort...

Had a one night stay and loved it. Most staff excellent and only let down by reception on arrival (I was ignored for 2 mins and only customer he was talking to another staff member who in the end pointed me out as waiting). I must admit the next time I spoke to them no issues. My highlight was the meal in panorama room. The best meal out in a very long time
