“Be prepared to empty your pocketbook”

This place was very nice and you pay for it and the location. The buffet dinner is $59 pp which was ridiculous. I've had better buffets for $5. They were very shady about the price and weren't exactly forthcoming either. We got upgraded to a superior suite and had wonderful views of Mt Cook. Our room was very nice, no disappointment there. The museum inside the hotel is nice as are the excursions, but pricey. Unless you stay in the backpackers lodge, be prepared to spend some money here.

Dear shell9163,

Thank you for taking the time to post your feedback on Tripadvisor.com.
I am pleased to see that you have enjoyed your stay with us and I am sorry that you find our Alpine Dinner Buffet not value for money. Many of our past guests have complimented us for our buffet and its selection and do feel that the price reflect ‘value for money’.

Operating a hotel in a National Park such as Mount Cook comes with high operational costs. For example every item what we require has to be road transported to us which is a considerable journey. Another example is that the hotel is charged costs that do not apply to any hotel in either a town or city location – these costs are concession fees in a 7 figure sum. We also accommodate all our employees’ onsite due to the remote location, which is another material cost. Therefore our charges are in some cases slightly higher then hotels operating in a town or city location but you can be assured that every product offered to our guests has been carefully priced.

I hope we will be able to welcome you back to the Hermitage Hotel in the nearest future.

Best regards,

Alexander Tschampel

The view of Mount Cook at Sunrise is totally amazing.
Don't forget to visit the Sir Edmond Hillary Centre.
Rooms were comfortable. Restaurant for evening dinner has great ambience and breakfast buffet has extremely good variety.

My wife and I spent one night here as part of a getaway weekend from Christchurch. The weather at this time of year is always a bit unpredictable. We stayed in the older section of the hotel (4-floors) on the 3rd floor. The room had a nice view of the Mt Cook but unfortunately there was major cloud-cover the following morning so there was no view to speak of. Still, the accomodations and setting were very nice. We were disappointed with the service we received at the ala carte restaurant (Panorama). Bookings are absolutely essential and need to (probably) made a full 24-hours in advance. We were not able to be seated until 7pm and waited a full hour for our meal to arrive. The meal was tasty but the wait was a bit unacceptable. Overall, its a hotel that you need to visit if you're ever in this part of NZ.

Hotel was good, and staff were very nice; yes, fabulous setting as others have said. We ate in the Panorama room restaurant, and this was a highlight- very attentive and pleasant staff, great ambience, and good food and wine, a lovely evening.
Rooms were practical and clean; only problem was that our shower was very luke warm and not hot (unpleasant to shower in). We reported this just before going for dinner, and someone went to check it out. We assumed (wrongly) that the problem had been fixed, but not so- so cold showers again in the morning. I mentioned this twice at check-out, but little was said about it. I wouldn't expect to have to put up with cold showers for the price we paid, or to have little concern about it from the staff. However, other than episode, this the staff we really great.

While on our way ton our son's graduation from Otago University, we managed a two day stay at The Hermitage Mount Cook. We received a very warm welcome on a cold day and we nicely surprised by the lovely room. We only felt like a light dinner so attended the Buffet. Two hours later and completely topped up with excellent fresh and high quality food we stumbled into our lovely king sized bed. The room was warm as and a good sleep.
It rains for 127 days a year at Mount Cook se were not too disappointed in not being able to see the mountains on waking. The three hour return walk up the Hooked Valley was suggested by the staff and this proved an excellent alpine walk despite the inclement weather.
Dinner in the a la carte Panorama Restaurant was of excellent quality although I would advise to make a booking for early in the evening as we were the lone and lonely diners by 8:30 pm! Also, check to see of the Buffet will be available. The Buffet was not on on the second night and we would have been caught without the ability to dine if we had planned to have the Buffet both nights.

The next day dawned with blue sky, amazing snow covered mountain tops and our own view of Mount Cook.
The Hermitage is a lovely place to stay in an amazing locality. Go and enjoy it yourself!

It's all about location at The Hermitage. That is what you are paying for at the prices they charge. My husband and I stayed in a Superior Room for 2 nights in March. The hotel itself is pretty big and can be a little confusing if your room is far from the lobby like ours was. We were staying in an older part of the hotel and was not aware that our room didn't have air conditioning. It wasn't that bad once we opened the door to the balcony and all the fresh mountain air came in. The next day we hiked to Kea Point and when we came back our room was very warm we ended up hanging out in the Cafe and Gift Shop to cool off. If you have to have AC then definitely upgrade your room to Premium or Premium plus in the newer part of the hotel.
Our room was only available with 2 queen beds which was odd, would have been nice to have had a king. The other bed made a nice luggage rack! The shower in our room was probably the worst part. The pressure was so low it was as if you were being spit on. Maybe we its better in other rooms and we just had bad luck. One nice amenity was the laundry room. We were on a month long honeymoon so it was nice to do our laundry fairly easily. We ate dinner in the Panorama Restaurant both nights and our food was excellent. I've seen other reviews complaining about the food but we had great meals and service. One morning we ate breakfast at the buffet and really thought it was mediocre. It was too crowded and the food seemed like it had been there forever.
Overall the hotel is pretty good. The service we received was good. The place is in need of a total makeover in my opinion but the views are amazing and its worth it to see even if only for a day!

From the moment we arrived I knew this place would be special. The best view from the top floor room that we had for 3 nights. The hotel is itself was well presented and the staff always helpful and friendly. Will be going back again in the near future.

Room Tip: Spend the extra and stay in the new wing on the top floor.
