“Rooms lovely, Chalets fairly basic”
Reviewed March 7, 2013

We had two rooms at this hotel. One standard room for our parents in the main hotel, as well as a Chalet for ourselves and our 15 month old.

The room in the main hotel was good, albeit slightly on the small side. It was well furnished and comfortable, with a good bathroom and a spectacular view to Mt Cook.

However, the Chalet was little disappointing. Basic furnishings, bland decor and small windows which afforded no view whatsoever to the mountains or surrounding scenery. Rather over-priced for the quality of accommodation.

My advice would be to book one of the two Chalets with a view to Mt Cook, or otherwise stay in the main hotel.

The hotel located right at the mt.cook area. very nice view from the hotel, but not all the rooms, depending what kind of room you paying for. I stayed in a standard room (the basic one), the room is renovated in a modern design, it's clean and simple. nothing fancy but just good for staying one or two nights. free parking available. The worst thing is no air con in-room, the room can be quite stuffy when in a hot weather. F&B are quite expensive in the hotel area and also around the mt.cook village, there are not much other choices for food, so you still have to go for it. other than that it's not too bad

It's not cheap to stay here but since we had travelled such a long way we decided to go for a Premium room and found ourselves up on the 9th floor with the most fabulous view of Mount Cook, just like the photos on the website. We paid ahead for breakfast, which was ok, stunning views again from the restaurant but the atmosphere in there was more like a nicely refurbished motorway stop restaurant than that of a fairly expensive hotel.

We didn't eat in the restaurant in the evening, taking the advice of one tripadvisor reviewer and heading to the Mountaineer Pub for supper (which was great!) So I can't comment on the evening meals.

Think you'd get more value for money staying 2 nights as we didn't really get the benefit of our beautiful room since we took a long walk the afternoon we arrived and check-out is rather early, we were actually tols 9:00am at the desk, though have since seen the website says before 10:00am.

Room Tip: If you can, book in the new wing (think it's the Aoraki Wing) and ask for a high floor. The vie...

We had a great view from our room, we didn't pay for one of Mount Cook but we got other mountains! The room was lovely and clean, the staff were friendly and helpful. The views from the cafe and restuarants were just stunning. We ate in the Panaromic view resturant and the view didn't disappoint!

We have just spent two nights at the Hermitage Hotel in the Aoraki Wing, with the most spectacular view from the bedroom of Mount Cook, looking up Hooker valley. The only thing you won't be able to guarantee is the weather!

It is expensive, but if the skies are clear it is well worth the money.

The view, the view, the view...it's all about the view!

The hotel is in a National Park and the accommodations are a little nicer than most park accommodations, but the rooms are 3 star. They have laundry facilities in the lodge, but they are a little pricey. Make sure you get a room that faces Mt. Cook as it is hard to take your eyes off of it.
The dining room has large windows with views of the Mountain as well. The hotel has programs with movies that are relavent to the visit and other exhibits as well as a nice gift shop. Prices in the gift shop can be beat elsewhere in the country. Breakfast was large and varied, but organized awkwardly. This required multiple trips to the buffet in order to get coffee, tea, water, juice and the rest of the meal. Make sure to bring your cup from your table in order to get coffee/tea off of the buffet.

The staff is all efficient and pleasant from the housekeepping to the waitstaff.

Room Tip: Make sure your room is oriented so that you have views of Mt. Cook!!

We spent 2 nights in a chalet. Loads of room, one double bed and 2 singles. Our next door neighbour in chalet 10 had a beautiful view of the snow capped mountains,we got a side view, but c'est la vie.
I do resent paying for wifi, but this includes first class support on a free 0800 number, which I found very useful
The buffet restaurant we used the first night was almost empty and the food was excellent. Fortunately we booked the a la carte for the second night and he buffet restaurant was heaving with coach parties. We had an excellent meal in the panorama restaurant - expensive for the ery small portions, but where else can you experience that view. The manager of the restaurant was exceptional and gave his time and experience freely
At the end of the day they have no competition, but that does not prevent them endeavouring to give their customers the best they can.
The adjacent St Edmund Hillary exhibition is an absalute must see with superb theatre showing 2D, 3D and Planetarium films for a very reasonable 20 dollars a head for entry as many times as you like during your stay
We would certainly return here if we were inthe area
