We stayed in a motel unit, which is detached from the main hotel area. The motel unit have 1 fully enclosed bedroom and a living room that contains a double bed and a fold out couch. There is 1 bathroom, shared by all in the living area. Most of the motel units have glorious views of Mt Cook from the rear of the unit. The kitchen is quite small but does have most things required for meal preparation - BYO oil, salt and pepper! The furnishing is a bit older but it's clean and tidy. It claims to fit 5 people, but the bedding configuration makes it quite hard to fit that many people, as there is only really 2 rooms in the unit, shared by all.

Excellent location to mountains and walking tracks etc. accommodation and facilities were very good. Lots of activities for all ages. Restaurants and cafe for all budgets. Arranged a surprise birthday cake for my traveling companion which was first class, and they didn't let the cat out of the bag!

This hotel was booked as part of our package, so was paid for within the overall cost of our trip. The welcome and service was very good and the accommodation was excellent. However, there was no swimming pool, wifi was available but at a charge of $5 per hour, and the final sting was for anything extra (such as our evening meal) there was a 2% surcharge for use of credit or debit card (a total rip off).

Room Tip: Ask for a view of the mountains.

Although this hotel is a bit pricey, it is well worth every penny. As a special Birthday treat, we decided to stay here and we were not disappointed. Our first floor room faced directly at Mount Cook. What a view! Our room was lovely, and spotlessly clean, and the bedding and towels first class. We had a lovely balcony on which to sit and have a glass or two of wine as we gazed in awe at Mount Cook, snow capped, and with a bright blue cloudless sky to set it off to perfection. Dinner in the Panorama Room with a front row table to see Mount Cook, was gorgeous. A memorable visit to Mount Cook and a memorable stay at The Hermitage. It was perfection.

Room Tip: Ask for a full view of Mount Cook.

This hotel has a wonderful scenic location at the head of the valley of Lake Pukaki and the Tasman River. The hotel offers all amenities and is very comfortable but the downside is he price for food and drink. The hotel believes that such a location requires their customers to pay dearly for food and beverage. Not so! There are other options available within walking distance but the hotel staff are very unlikely to tell you about them. Fierce competition!
The hotel caters for large groups of Japanese tourists at this time of year and although they are all very polite they are also very noisy from about 7.00am, rushing to be first for breakfast.
That said, we had an enjoyable short stay here (but ate elsewhere).
It is not worth paying the extra cost for the "mountain view" as the mountains are invariably shrouded in mist and low cloud, particularly in the morning.
Try eating at the YHA. Very reasonable prices and good beer. The spare ribs washed down with cold beer is a must.
Be aware that accommodation in the Mount Cook region ( on the Geraldine side) is limited and advance bookings are recommended. He nearest township for alternative accommodation is about 75km away.

Dear Stozzas,

Thank you for posting your review on TripAdvisor.com.
I am pleased to see that you have enjoyed your stay at the Hermitage Hotel in Aoraki Mount Cook National Park.
We do not believe that our guests have to pay dearly for food and beverages but would like to advise you that operating a hotel in a National Park comes with additional costs most hotels in New Zealand don’t have to pay. For example, every item we require to service our guests has to be road transported to us and in return, all rubbish has to be road transported out of the National Park to the nearest recycling plant which is in Timaru. We also have to pay concession fees to the Department of Conservations, which is a substantial sum. Being a business we are unable to absorb those costs and have to pass them on to the end consumer, our guests. However, I can guarantee you that every item sold in our hotel has carefully price calculated. We also don’t hesitate to provide guests with direction to other dining options outside the Hermitage Hotel. In your case, you must have dined at the Chamois Bar & Grill based at the local Mount Cook Backpackers Lodge (the YHA is not offering any dining options open to the public), which offers great cold beer and pub style food. For the comfort and safety of their guests, the hotel is operating a complimentary shuttle service to the Chamois bar & Grill and back to their accommodation. We believe that every visitor to the Aoraki Mount Cook should at least dined once at the Chamois Bar & Grill at the local Mount Cook Backpackers Lodge.

Once again, thank you for your feedback and we hope we will be able to welcome you back to the hotel in the near future.

Best regards,

Alexander Tschampel

Ugh! No clock in the room, really hard pillows, insuffient liquid soap in the containers, and all this for a view of other rooms.
Also, don't bother with the expensive dining option. We did and realized later the buffet would have been more than sufficient.
The Hermitage was fine for one night, but having been there, we would have dined differently and opted for the more-expensive mountain view room.

Dear JARPHX,

Thank you for posting your review on TripAdvisor.com.
I can confirm that we display the local time on all of our guest rooms. By reading your feedback I believe that you must have stayed in one of our newly refurbished standard rooms, where the time feature is integrated into the in-room phone display.
We also provide 4 pillows per bed as a standard and the possibility for guests to request different type pillows (e.g. firmer or softer pillows) from our Housekeeping department.
The installed soap dispensers in our rooms hold 310ml and get refilled daily by our room attendants. We feel that this amount of body & hand wash is sufficient.
However, due to individual preferences guests may require a refill of the complimentary provided bathroom amenities, which also can be requested from our Housekeeping team at no extra cost.
During the summer months, we are in the position of providing guests with a variety of dining options throughout the hotel. Information to the individual restaurants and bars can be obtained from our website, the in-room compendium or simply by asking one of our guest service professionals. It is in our interest that each guest is receiving the service they desire, as we believe that this will guarantee that they enjoy their stay at the Hermitage Hotel in the Aoraki Mount Cook National Park.

Once again, thank you for your feedback and we hope we will be able to welcome you back to the hotel in the near future.

My family of four stayed in mid-Feb, and the setting of the Hermitage is truly extraordinary, the service was more than helpful at the front desk and elsewhere, and the various outdoor activities where great. The hike through the valley with a full frontal view of Mt Cook is breathtaking, and the 4WD Argo tour with Graham was excellent...both fun and exceptionally informative. We enjoyed the Old Mountaineer Cafe best for food & drink, as opposed to dinning in the more expensive hotel restaurant. Do be aware that the hotel has several wings and I imagine the rooms are of varying levels of update and views accordingly.

Room Tip: make sure you have a room with a Mt Cook view...the higher the better.
