Hermitage Hotel
Reviewed February 22, 2013

My family of four stayed in mid-Feb, and the setting of the Hermitage is truly extraordinary, the service was more than helpful at the front desk and elsewhere, and the various outdoor activities where great. The hike through the valley with a full frontal view of Mt Cook is breathtaking, and the 4WD Argo tour with Graham was excellent...both fun and exceptionally informative. We enjoyed the Old Mountaineer Cafe best for food & drink, as opposed to dinning in the more expensive hotel restaurant. Do be aware that the hotel has several wings and I imagine the rooms are of varying levels of update and views accordingly.

Room Tip: make sure you have a room with a Mt Cook view...the higher the better.

Given what some of the reviews had to say we were unsure how good our stay would be but we need not have worried. Everything was good. We picked a premium room which means you do have a fantastic view of the mountain. And binoculars helpfully provided in the room were a real advantage. We had an excellent dinner in the Panorama restaurant for which I have done a separate review.

As others have noted while the rooms are comfortable the bathrooms, while perfectly adequate, are perhaps not quite what you would normally expect from a luxury hotel. While we had no problems with either accommodation or the service received, I can see why sometimes it might fall down. It caters for a whole variety of travellers including bus parties and the logistics cannot be easy. The buffet Breakfast was ok with plenty of choice but the number of people it caters for makes it feel a bit institutional.

If you are considering going my advice would be to take it as it comes and go primarily for the Mount Cook experience. Some of the cinema and planetarium shows are worth catching - the one on black holes was particularly interesting.

Just stayed at the Hermitage on the 5 floor. The view from our window looking straight at Mt Cook was a great sight to open the curtains to in the morning. The room was very clean and serviced daily.Great food available .Dined in the panorama room for a large family dinner. The staff there couldn`t do any more for us.Great attention. They made us feel very welcome. The hotel also has a great gift shop and museum. We would highly recommend this as the place to stay. We will be back.

The view of the Aoraki Mt Cook from the hotel was awe inspiring and made me decide that although we were only staying there for one night on our tour of NZ, it was worth upgrading to a room with a view of the mountain. The room we upgraded to was a good size, very clean and the view was outstanding; the bed was really comfortable with good linen. I agree with previous reviewers that wi fi should be free for residents.
We took a short walk around the 'village' and having investigated the dining options booked a table in the Panorama restaurant; we got a table by the window, with a great view. The restaurant was quite busy, and was a bit understaffed - the few waiting staff were efficient, but had a lot of ground to cover. The decor in the Panorama was underwhelming, with acres of brown carpet, this room needs some attention, but everywhere else in the hotel was fine.
It was a clear night and after dinner we sat on our balcony, stargazing.
The next morning we didn't have much time, so got up early and before breakfast took one of the shortest trail walks, to Kea Point, which gave us a good view of lateral moraine (last encountered by me in about 25 years ago in a Geography textbook, which didn't do it justice). We were sorry we hadn't booked a longer stay.

Fantastic location at foot of hills giving access to many local activities. The rooms we stayed in were comfortable but had limited mountain views. Other rooms may have been smaller but had better views. No free Internet access though.

The menu for dinner was the same both nights and adequate, not exceptional, catering mainly for Asian visitors. The Breakfast Menu was also identical each morning.

Didn't sample the Sir Edmund Hilary Alpine Centre other than as a prelude to a star gazing evening which itself was a wonderful experience.

Well worth a visit nearby is the Tourist Information Centre which was more like a museum.

Room Tip: Probably the higher up the better

The place is amazing. Our room was overlooking Mt Cook and the view was perfect.
My only but is the cost of the food....buffet dinner at almost $60 per person. PLEASE!!
Let's get back to reality here. Basically the place is the only game in town and the take advantage.

The to was great, the service excellent but find another place to eat.

Stayed at the motel Saturday 2nd February. Rooms were great and staff very courteous and helpful Would definitely stay again. The views from the hotel itself of Aoraki Mt Cook were stunning. We didn't eat dinner at the Hermitage but had a lovely breakfast there with a window side table. Lunch from the cafe was reasonably priced

Room Tip: we stayed in a motel room which came with a full kitchen, large bedroom and clean modern bathroom. L...
