“Perfect honeymoon spot”
Reviewed October 9, 2012

We stayed 3 nights in the premium plus top floor room. Excellent stay, cannot recommend this place highly enough.
Great spot for walks and...honeymoon activities. Our son also joined us on our last day of honeymoon, very family friendly.
Only complaint was our car doors were frozen shut when we went to leave, Mount Cook was trying to tell us something.

What a stunning place - poured with rain the first day and very little to see or do in inclement weather but perfect sunshine and stunning views the second day. The Hermitage really has a prized location with lovely views from our room. Unfortunately, this monopoly, in our experience, contributed to sub standard service from staff.

We were in a standard mountain view room which was quite cramped, particularly with a portacot, but did have simple but up to date and tasteful decor. We called to ask if there were any rooms with a bathtub to bathe our baby before bed and were told there would be a $75 upgrade fee. We requested a high chair to give bub dinner and were told it would be brought right up - it never arrived. We called ahead to book stargazing, but when we phoned that evening to check if it was cancelled with the rain we were informed our names were not on the list anyway. The activities desk weren't very informed about heli ski options.

Certainly, the reviews are right, it's the best hotel in Mt Cook, given its location. I would like to see service be as memorable as this incredible location and do it justice. Next time I think we would stay at Lake Tekapo and day trip to Mount cook.

Room Tip: Opt for a larger room in the Wakefield wing with mountain views. Think ahead if you will need a bah...

Dear valuable guest,

Thank you for posting your feedback about your recent stay at the Hermitage Hotel on Tripadvisor.com. I certainly appreciate being made aware of any service discrepancies and having the opportunity to rectify them.

The Hermitage Hotel offers different accommodation types to guests to ensure their comfort and well-being while with us. As you have traveled with young children, I agree that staying in a Standard Mt Cook View room was most likely not the most comfortable option and I invite you to visit the hotels website to gain more information on the different room categories we have available. Really popular by families with young children are our Chalets or Motel accommodation which offer more room space compare to our Standard hotel rooms, cooking and dining facilities, a spacious bathroom and mountain views.

I have shared your feedback with my team to make them aware about the shortfall in service you have experienced and I am confident that this action will prevent any other guests of experiencing the same as you did. Misplacing your ‘Stargazing’ booking or not following your request for a high chair in your room is certainly not the service level we want to provide to our guests.

Once again, thank you for your feedback and we hope we will be able to welcome you again to the Hermitage Hotel in the future.

Best regards,

Alexander Tschampel

The Hermitage Hotel has a long and interesting history which includes several expansions and re-furbishments. We were in a non-smoking Superior Room on the top floor of the Wakefield wing which included two queen beds, our own balcony and fantastic views of Mt.Cook at the head of the Hooker Valley. The hotel is clean, modern with an alpine feel, well appointed for relaxation with two restaurants plus a cafe; open fires [ when cold ] and bars. The staff are welcoming, attentive, knowledgeable and so nice to talk to.
This was our fourth visit [ for a two day toal break ] and we will be back !

Awesome hotel location with the best views in the village of Mount Cook. Courtous staff and a freindly alpine atmosphere. Very relaxing. The Hillary centre was an attraction in its self. Would fefinately visit again.

Room Tip: The higher up the better.

My husband and I spent 1 night in a standard room at the Hermitage. The room was surprisingly small-I think it had a Queen bed and barely any room to walk around, but it did have a small balcony overlooking Mt Cook. The room was comfortable and good for 1 night. I would opt for a larger room if we were staying longer. The bathroom shower was interesting-it's basically open to the rest of the bathroom, with shower curtains to keep the shower spray in, but I managed to flood most of the floor with the shower water. My husband (an engineer) didn't have the same problem I did. I should have asked him what the trick was to keep the water contained. We ate the dinner buffet (quite pricey and I didn't find the food all that wonderful) and the breakfast buffet, which I did think was good. We had a gloomy, snowy arrival but the next day was glorious-sunny and the mountains were covered with fresh snow. We were able to take a helicopter ride at the Mt Cook airport, arranged by The Hermitage. The flight was one of the highlights of our trip. We were in the front seats of the helicopter and I took some incredible photos. Not sure if I would be so thrilled if I was sitting in the back of the helicopter or not by a window. Expensive outing, but worth it for us. I would recommend The Hermitage and would go again, keeping in mind the room size and the meal options.

We took advantge of a special dinner, bed and breakfast offer and as we wanted a full day at Mount Cook, stayed for 2 nights on this offer. Well, the weather was dreadful and we had no views of Mount Cook, but that really did not matter. The hotel has a lovley calming atmosphere and we took the opportunity to re-charge batteries, reading in front of the crackling wood fire. We stayed in a standard room with mountain views (!) but the hotel has been cleverly designed so that the balconies are covered, but with glass roofs. The food was excellent, especially in the panorama restaurant. On our second morning, there had been a heavy fall of snow and everything looked beautiful. The road clearers were out and the roads were cleared, allowing us to return home, although I would have happily stayed another night!

Room Tip: A standard room with balcony on the second floor with mountain views is a good option.

We stayed here recently and will definitely be back. Love the chalet feel, comfortable rooms, large balconies, great views and friendly staff. The marshmallows provided for guests to toast by the fire is a great touch and made a group of adults into kids again! We opted for the buffet for dinner. This was not really our thing so look forward to the alacarte option next time. Hot water bottles on request were also a nice home comfort and personal touch. Only one point we found a little odd... We were a walk in booking with three people. We opted to book a Superior room as it had two queen beds. We had to pay the standard room price plus an additional charge for our "extra third person". Whilst I understand extra charges for people when additional bedding is required to accommodate someone in a room, I find it difficult to understand how this charge is justified for the use of existing bedding. No other additionals were placed in the room for this third person and we had to call reception for an extra bath towel.

Dear valuable guest,

Thank you very much for posting your feedback about your recent stay at the Hermitage Hotel on Tripadvisor.com. I am really pleased to see that you have enjoyed your stay with us and that you plan to visit us again in the future.

I have read your comments about the extra charge for the third person in your group. The reason for the extra charge is due to additional costs for such as linen, water and other consumables placed in the room. You have stayed in a twin bed room, which features two queen size beds. Guests who travel only as a couple would have stayed in a single bed room (except otherwise requested) and therefore the cost to the hotel to setup the room would be lesser. I trust that this will explain your question.

Once again, thank you for your feedback and we hope we will be able to welcome you again to the Hermitage Hotel in the future.
