This is a great alternative to dining at The Hermitage. We loved our meal here, pan fired teriyaki salmon on soba noodles with vegetables ($28) followed by sticky date pudding & ice cream ($9) Its quick counter service here and is open between 5.30 - 9.00. There's plenty to choose from and pizzas are around $18. The downside here is that the dining area is cavernous, its modern and clean but sparsely furnished with not a lot of atmosphere. The big sports screen rules here and the noise dominates.

We stayed at the Hermitage but did not eat there because it seemed too stuffy and not elegant anyway...just expensive. We opted for this casual place instead. Well prepared steaks, chops, and even seafood for all four of our party. No one was disappointed. The venue is a backpackers lodge and you put your order at the bar and pick up your meal at the counter when it is ready. Doesn't get more pared down than that, does it? But who goes to Mount Cook for a culinary experience? Enjoy the basic grub and get outside. We were there on an autumn evening, but we saw that there were tables outside with a terrific view in the daytime!

Tidy enough and typical backpacker style bar and grill. Unfortunately had a terrible experience with the lamb pizza. It had about half a block of cheese grated on top, needless to say the base was uncooked. The worse part was the lamb, it smelt like it had been cooked, frozen, reheated and then cooked over again - the smell alone was revolting! Wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy. My partner, who is never fussed over what he eats, took one whiff and took it straight back to the kitchen. The staff member behind the bar was apologetic and took it back to the kitchen, the chef however disagreed and told us that it was fine. Thankfully we took a refund and got out of there!

There is a free shuttle that will take you from the Hermitage to Chamois, just ask at the front desk and they will call a shuttle for you. This is a Pub like place with casual food. Expect a burger, fries, pizza & pasta type of casual menu. You place your order and get a number. Grab a drink from the Bar and find yourself a seat. You need to watch for your number to be called then pick up your food. Nothing special here but Chamios offers a casua & lcost effective alternative to the other more expensive dining options in the Village. After you eat and have a beer just ask the bartender to call a shuttle and you will be taken back to the Hermitage. Nice choice if you want something casual.

My husband and I had very different experiences. I had a very undercooked and mediocre pizza, figuring how bad can pizza be. I was disappointed, but my husband really loved his steak sandwich. The service was not great. Nice enough, but they seemed confused about whether you should get it yourself (it is counter service/take away window) or whether they could help. A few little fixes on food and a more coherent way to get food would go a long way. Our bill here was half of what it was at the Panorama just up the road, but if you can afford it and are in the mood for a nice meal, spring for the dinner just up the road.
