“Ok but too cold in the cafe to enjoy”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 18, 2014

We have dined here before and had a good meal a few years ago so on our return visit to Aoraki we decided to go with what we knew. However, on entering the cafe it was cold. We went straight to the fire to try and get some warmth but it wasn't really pumping out enough heat. There was one other log burner at the other end of the room which all the tables were huddled around but it wasn't good enough. As a result all we wanted was to order, eat quickly and get back to the warmth of our motel. I think they need to get some extra heating sources for the cooler winter months which would help with the ambience and the feel. Food was ok,nothing amazing, but all overshadowed by the fact we all ate at a 100 miles an hour with our puffer jackets on to get out as quick as we could. Probably should have got food to go. Did mention the lack of warmth to waiter but he just said it was cold outside. Yep it was...and inside too.

I am sorry that you were cold, despite the huge open log fire and the log burner going flat out.
It has been incredibly chilly this week with temperatures of -10 and we are making plans for a furnace..

“Great place to eat after a hike”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 17, 2014

We were afraid that this place would be expensive because there were limited options in Mt Cook + it was next to the DOC Visitor Centre but the food was reasonably priced and also tasty. The soups were great after a cold windy hike.

“Stunning Location. Fabulous Food. Lovely Owners.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 15, 2014

We first visited the Old Mountaineers 8 years ago and remembered it really fondly. So there was simply no way I was going anywhere else for my birthday dinner this time around! Food was excellent and the green vegetable curry was simply first rate. (We subsequently had dinner at the Old Mountaineers the night after that, too. And a breakfast one morning as well. Guess we're fans!).

The cafe/restaurant offers stunning views, truly hospitable staff and simply fabulous atmosphere. Had the complete pleasure also of meeting Charlie and Mary who own the venue. They've created a very special bolt hole at Aoraki Mount Cook. And what's more they went out of their way to make this armchair mountaineer's day by happily chatting about all things adventure. THANK YOU :-)

“Welcoming on a cold night”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 14, 2014 via mobile

Sat by the fire on a rainy night for a drink, then a lovely, unhurried meal. Good sized portions. The staff were attentive and the place was very child friendly.

“Fantastic freshly cooked local food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 8, 2014

Dismayed at the rip off prices at the next door Hermitage Hotel where we were staying we were delighted to find thischarming restaurant where we booked a window table with a view of the sun setting over Mount Cook.

The menu was wide, the food was local and freshly prepared and the service was great.

Thoroughly recommended.
