Great place for dinner, lunch or just drinks! Try the salmon pizza or their meat pies for a great treat.

Thanks for your lovely review. Those pies are made by a local award-winning artisan baker. He'll be pleased you loved it! Try our organic roast with organic vegetables next time you're back this way! Travel safe. Best regards, Mary and Charlie

“A great one of a kind experience!”
Reviewed January 2, 2013

After a long day of hiking around Mt. Cook we wanted to stop and have a good hearty meal. The Old Mountaineers Cafe Bar & Restaurant is everything someone in love with the mountains would want in a bar and restaurant. It has a cozy lodge feel with great views and old school mountaineering gear and photos all over. Not only is the food good, the majority, if not all, of the food and drinks are environmentally conscious, all organic, free-range and GE-free. The restaurant has an amazing story as well. We were so happy we stumbled upon this gem.

Thanks so very much for your wonderful writeup on The Old Mountaineers' Cafe, Bar, Restaurant and Historic Gallery. You have no idea what a boost it is to read that we have things right, after a long day "at the coalface". So delighted to hear that you loved the organic food too. As you can imagine that takes extra effort and when we see that people like yourselves truly appreciate it, it's a real thrill. One of the best things for us is the great people like you we meet, too. Thanks for visiting and we look forward to your return. Warm regards, Mary and Charlie

“simply love it”
Reviewed December 27, 2012

I originally expected an old cafe with simple food, perhaps nice to drop in for a coffee after walk at Mount Cook. But I was wrong. It is a nicely decorated, warm and charming place with great view. The atmosphere made me feel so easy and comfortable. I tried Salmon Bagel and it was just perfect! The shop and the place will make you comfortably stay for a couple of hours, if you wish to. I think there is no need to stick to the Hermitage for food, from breakfast to dinner. You will definitely have more value-for-money choices here! Cafe just next to DOC visitor centre and the carpark. Very convenient too!
