As a local, I would say to visitors that a trip to Methven isn’t complete without a visit to the quirkiest cafe in Mid Canterbury, whether it’s for a hearty brekkie before a day on the slopes, or a relaxing cuppa and muffin in the afternoon.
Cafe Primo e Secundo is a treasure trove full of funky kiwiana and retro second hand items, while serving up coffee that hits the spot.
The food is delicious, hearty and tasty, which is why it's not only a point of interest for tourists, but many locals make it a regular meeting place for a catch-up.
The cool thing about the cafe is that everything you see if for sale. All of the cute little treasures in the corner, the rug you walk over or even the table and chair you sit at to enjoy your coffee, if something takes your fancy, make an offer to the owner and you can have it.
When you pop in for a visit, a “must try” is the world famous bacon and egg toastie. Legendary amongst locals and tourists, some order the delicious munchable just by the name of “world famous”. It will set you up well for the day that's for sure.
The coffee is consistently good, which is great to know that you will always get a caffeine injection that hits the spot, and if you're a tomato soup fan, the soup here is divine.
The cafe seems to be open longer hours than others in the town which is fantastic, and open 7 days a week, so early morning coffee on a Sunday is possible.
For a great coffee, hearty tasty food and entertaining second hand treasures to keep your eyes occupied, this cafe is a great place to visit.

As another reviewer said - serving lady is eccentric and a little gruff. But the soup is amazing! Chunky, hearty, tasty. Setting is op- shopish. Quirky but cosy. Will def be back.
