We stayed at the Redwood Lodge Feb. 8th - 10th 2013. This is their quiet time with only one other customer in for the night! We had a spotless, tastfully decorated room with ensuite. Redecorating was being done throughout as ski season was considered to be right around the corner.
We met the lovely dogs and sheep, chatted it up with both Liz and Martin. What an awesome couple who went above and beyond to meet our needs. We can't say enough for how they treated us - a favorite stop after travelling for a month throughout all of wonderful New Zealand. Christchurch was the last destination before moving out of the country and were we ever glad to have had the lovely ambiance of Methven instead of the all our time in Christchurch with the aftermath it's devastation.

Room Tip: Just ask! we asked for a queen bed with ensuite and got a lovely room in the middle of the south sid...

The Red Lodge is a peaceful and relaxing place to stay. The common room is warm, cozy and quiet. Great for reading a book, playing games or visiting with friends. The kitchen is well stocked, organized and clean. Complimentary tea and coffee are always available. Upon arrival at the lodge, the owner ran out to grab milk so we would have it for our tea!!! What amazing service.

The owners were disarming and warm from the second we met them. They checked on us throughout our stay to ensure we were comfortable. They offered great advice about places in the area that we should visit.

The rooms at the Red Lodge are spacious and beautifully decorated in a soft shade of purple, with a brighter shade of paint in the bathroom. The soft colors really make the room feel warm. The big, cozy bed in the double room is furnished with multiple pillows and a heated blanket. Perfect for hunkering down to watch TV in your room!!

Most of all, we loved the animals. Be sure to say 'hi' to Mildred and George, the German Short Hairs, and Snapper, the sheep!!!! They're very cute!!

Room Tip: Great Value!!

Stayed just one night before the Women on Wheels race. Was perfectly low key, low stress, chilled accommodation - just what was needed before my first ever race. Liz even came along to the race and took our photos. Only in NZ. Now planning to return in the winter for a weekend of skiing.

We visited Methven in December to go to the trotting racing and met the owner, Moose when he overheard us talking about where we were going to stay and he offered us a couple of rooms at his place. The place was spotless and rooms very comfy. All on sweet. Moose and his wife Liz were both very helpful. Would come back any day.

We stayed the weekend of Spring Challenge, the womens adventure race. The lodge was full, but there was plenty of room for all of us and the kitchen, dining, living areas were great. Hosts very friendly. Good value for money and would stay again. Thanks.

We spent a couple of days at the Redwood Lodge with friends and were impressed with the friendly atmosphere of the establishment. This, however, did not compensate for what was very expensive/ poor value accommodation. We stayed in the room beneath the stairs which meant that every step taken by a guest sounded like a heard of rhino's stampeding up and down at whatever time suited others. Needless to say that we had very early, unintended, grumpy starts on both mornings.

The room itself was hostel-esque and furnished with a random assortment of odds and ends thrown together. The bedroom had 1 double bed (small double) and 2 bunk beds. In addition there was a tiny bedside table with one lamp. At the bottom end of the bed was a clothes closet with a small flat screen tv with surprisingly good, crisp reception. Mattress comfort was average.

The shower was adequate but toilet was not. Every time you flushed the loo it sprayed all of its contents into the air and on to the toilet seat which wasn't great. The hand basin's hot water tap came off as the wee, oddly fitting, screw kept coming out (not the end of the world, just another oversight). In addition, the toilet roll mounting was filthy with dust collecting around it.

WiFi is not free but is available. Location - excellent and close to town centre and local amenities. Hosts are keen to help and will point you in the right direction of whatever it is you may require.

Overall: the $180 for 2 nights for what was on offer = poor value. I felt ripped off. It wasn't the amount of money as much as what it bought us. The hosts were good natured and we enjoyed their conversation. I appreciate that the accommodation is advertised as hostel style digs but for the money we were expecting a little more. I travel extensively around New Zealand for work and have regularly had far better accommodation experiences for similar money.

Room Tip: Book as far from the stairs and front entrance as possible - avoid room 1.

Hi Stannas

Thank you for making your comments positive or negative.

We were told about the heard of rhinos, who apparently had been to the local pub where a band were playing and had a great night and got a little tipsy. It would have been useful to know the very next day and then maybe we would have been able to offer an alternative room. Not all Guests show respect for those who wish to have a quiet time.

The décor of the rooms is not of our choosing and a major refurb is on the cards, we are new owners and tastes do differ.

We are fortunate to have great water pressure, however we do not expect you to shower using the toilet, I'm on to it. Also checking all taps.

Appollogies for the dust on the toilet holder.

I am surprised with the comment regarding value for money, Methven is a ski town with a variety of accommodation to suit all budgets, we provided a double en suite room, heating, electric blankets, fresh towels and linen, extensive shared kitchen and lounge facilities off road parking drying room and a smile for $90.00 per night.

Once again thank you for bringing some points to our attention.
