“Great Hosts but Poor Value”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 17, 2012

We spent a couple of days at the Redwood Lodge with friends and were impressed with the friendly atmosphere of the establishment. This, however, did not compensate for what was very expensive/ poor value accommodation. We stayed in the room beneath the stairs which meant that every step taken by a guest sounded like a heard of rhino's stampeding up and down at whatever time suited others. Needless to say that we had very early, unintended, grumpy starts on both mornings.

The room itself was hostel-esque and furnished with a random assortment of odds and ends thrown together. The bedroom had 1 double bed (small double) and 2 bunk beds. In addition there was a tiny bedside table with one lamp. At the bottom end of the bed was a clothes closet with a small flat screen tv with surprisingly good, crisp reception. Mattress comfort was average.

The shower was adequate but toilet was not. Every time you flushed the loo it sprayed all of its contents into the air and on to the toilet seat which wasn't great. The hand basin's hot water tap came off as the wee, oddly fitting, screw kept coming out (not the end of the world, just another oversight). In addition, the toilet roll mounting was filthy with dust collecting around it.

WiFi is not free but is available. Location - excellent and close to town centre and local amenities. Hosts are keen to help and will point you in the right direction of whatever it is you may require.

Overall: the $180 for 2 nights for what was on offer = poor value. I felt ripped off. It wasn't the amount of money as much as what it bought us. The hosts were good natured and we enjoyed their conversation. I appreciate that the accommodation is advertised as hostel style digs but for the money we were expecting a little more. I travel extensively around New Zealand for work and have regularly had far better accommodation experiences for similar money.

Room Tip: Book as far from the stairs and front entrance as possible - avoid room 1.

Hi Stannas

Thank you for making your comments positive or negative.

We were told about the heard of rhinos, who apparently had been to the local pub where a band were playing and had a great night and got a little tipsy. It would have been useful to know the very next day and then maybe we would have been able to offer an alternative room. Not all Guests show respect for those who wish to have a quiet time.

The décor of the rooms is not of our choosing and a major refurb is on the cards, we are new owners and tastes do differ.

We are fortunate to have great water pressure, however we do not expect you to shower using the toilet, I'm on to it. Also checking all taps.

Appollogies for the dust on the toilet holder.

I am surprised with the comment regarding value for money, Methven is a ski town with a variety of accommodation to suit all budgets, we provided a double en suite room, heating, electric blankets, fresh towels and linen, extensive shared kitchen and lounge facilities off road parking drying room and a smile for $90.00 per night.

Once again thank you for bringing some points to our attention.

Redwood lodge was a very clean, warm and welcoming place with amazing hosts and a fantastic log fire. The hosts were really helpful and incredably friendly. The kitchen / dining area was large and really well equipped

We stayed in a double en-suite room which was better value than being in a motel, it was clean and warm, and the hosts were friendly and have awesome lurchers. Would stay again if we were heading through the town.

Fantastic facilities. Hosts so friendly, felt like I had known them for years. Very clean accommodation, comfortable beds and excellent attention to detail. Can't wait to stay there again next year, this time - on my honeymoon!!

Great hostel! We stayed for one night in a double room and found Redwood Lodge to be fantastic. We were particularly impressed by how clean and spotless all the facilities were, particularly the kitchen and how homely it was. Kitchen is really well equipped and has great teapots (see photo) ;-) There's a nice log burner to keep the lounge warm and lots of comfy couches, perfect after a hard day's skiing. It's not too big and not too small either and there's lots of space in the lounge/dining area. The owners are very friendly and welcoming and the whole place is really comfortable - feels like you are in someone's house! A big plus is the massive friendly sheep named 'Snapper' who's in the field next door (he's owned by the hostel owners).....he's really tame and super cute. Big boy - see the photo!! The hostel is in walking distance to town and there's also some hot pools in the hotel next door which you can pay a little to use. I would highly recommend Redwood lodge as a place to stay!

Room Tip: We stayed in a double room - comfy, warm and clean!

If you are looking at this property for your next stay in Methven, you can finish your search right now and just book in here. The place is warm and cozy, it feels like home! Everything is clean (actually spotless) and in good working order. Liz and Moose are amazing at running the place. Snapper the sheep is pretty awesome too :)
(Liz and Moose: For the guessing competition I estimate his weight is 92kg).

Room Tip: Some rooms have a shared bathroom with another room, but this really isn't a problem. The bathro...

We could not have stayed in a better place in Methven for skiing Mt. Hutt. I stayed with my son for 4 days in the redwood lodge which is under new mangement. The hosts are incredibly friendly and the living room just like home. Plus there is a well equipped and spacy kitchen and a large and cosy living room with a fire place. Rooms are clean and well maintained and from what we experienced in NZ this place is excellent value considering pricing and what is being offered. The lodge is in a very quiet location but not far from the centre (Methven anyway is very small). I would definitely stay again in the red wood lodge, when coming back to NZ. We can only recommend it very warmly and without hesitation to anybody who likes this kind of cosy, open and friendly athmosphere.
