“An excellent spot to stay”
Reviewed April 27, 2013

We booked one of the apartments for our biking group Smokin 'Arrows, and it was cosy and comfy. Would be excellent for a family on a ski holiday too. Hosts Leunne and Alex were really cheerful and helpful. Highly recommend it. Cosy woodfire burner in lounge and 2 toilets in the apartment.

Hi AucklandJax,

Thank you for your comments. I hope the Smokin Arrows crew got home safe and sound and without too many saddle blisters…

We are happy you enjoyed your apartment. The fireplace is surely a hit. Some years ago, a travel expert recommended that we have it pre-lit for guests to walk into the apartment to the soft glow of a warm fireplace: This adds the WOW factor. We are so happy you enjoyed.

Can we expect to see you for the ski season starting in a few weeks? Hope so.

Thank you again for your comments.

My partner, two month old and myself recently spent a wonderful weekend at Abisko Lodge. We were delighted with how homely and welcoming the lodge and the managers were to myself and my family. we we spent our evenings by the gorgeous fire relaxing and getting to know our hosts. Definitely recommend Abisko! thank you for such a great experience, Alex and Luenne. We can't wait to return.

Hi A-Renouf,

It was great to see you and your young family recently on your visit to Methven.
The main feature of our lodge is the warm and friendly atmosphere which is shared amongst us and our guests. During winter, we have the log-fire burning in the lounge area where you can enjoy a coffee, some music and a chat (or maybe try your hand at Pictionary). We have started the fire already (I know, it is not even winter yet).

Maybe we will see you for baby’s first visit to the snow?

Thank you again for your comments. Look forward to seeing you soon.

I have been to Abisko Lodge for four ski seasons now. I have never met more wonderful people than Alex and Leunne. They are so knowledgable of the area and helpful. Nothing is a bother. The location is great. The view of the mountain from the lounge room is simply breath taking. My evenings are spent having a 'night cap' by the fire before I recharge for another day skiing. See you this ski season again!

Hi Docedm,

Thank you for your comments.

We are so glad you enjoyed your self-contained apartment. I agree, the views of the mountains are, at times spectacular – just a pity we could not have put on one of those special sunrises we sometimes get. This really showcases the mountain well.

Methven is a real hub for the ski enthusiast with over 19 different ski options within an hour or two of the village. There is nearly always an option available on most days from Heli-Skiing, to the club fields or the traditional Mt Hutt.

Snowaction magazine (just hit the shelves this week) sums Methven (My Hutt) and the Canterbury ski fields up real well with a 16 page editorial. To steal the words of the travel editor of Snow Action, David Windsor… “In a tweet, Mt Hutt is a slick, international destination that ticks all the boxes”. Cool comments.

Looking forward to seeing you next time you take on the mountain terrain.

Thank you again.

We had a group doing a cycling trip and stayed in one of the apartments. Nice old building and good place to stay. The rooms were well laid out with plenty of space and a generous lunge kitchen downstairs.

Location was a short walk into town. Didn't get a chance to look around the rest of the facilities but I'd be happy to stay there again.

Hi KiwiTraveller199,

Thank you for your comments.

The cycle tour through town was so exciting to see with heaps of energy for the town, and a little friendly rivalry with the occasional support vehicle “Van-D-Lised”…

Luenne and myself were so happy to host you guys and we are so happy you enjoyed the apartment. We agree, they are quite spacious. This last year, we purchased new king-split beds for all bedrooms, so a couple can have the comfort of a king bed now.

Thank you again for your comments. Maybe we will see you next year when the cycling trip passes through town.

We stayed a week with another family and had an fantastic time. Our kids were made welcome and the hosts Alex and Luenne went out of their way to help us with great travel tips and were at all times friendly and professional. We will be staying there next time we ski Mt Hutt and would recommend Abisko to all our friends.

Hi jonswhaler,

Thank you for your lovely comments. I think I can remember exactly which two families with the younglings.

Glad your family enjoyed their stay with us. As I recall, it was their first trip to the snow – hope they want to come back.

Being new grandparents, and with Luenne’s background working with children, we love children and treat them as our own (as long as we can give them back). Your children, as we recall, were lovely and polite little ones. A testament to their parents.

Looking forward to seeing you again soon and thanks again for taking the time review us.

Many thanks

Lodge rooms are simple, but a good size, clean and well maintained. Methven options can be a little tricky in the summer since their high season is winter for skiing, but Abisko Lodge was a comfortable and well priced stopover for us. Staff were very friendly and helpful when we arrived tired from a long drive.

Hi Andrea_by_Bike,

First, my apologies for not responding sooner – I am not sure how I missed your review. It is our policy to respond to all reviews wherever possible.

Thank you for your review and your lovely comments that you have made – we are glad that we met your expectations as a seasoned traveler and member of the Trip Advisor community. Your review is highly valued by us.

Thank you for identifying the characteristics that are Abisko Lodge: We try and make everyone’s stay warm and friendly with a little local knowledge to help you to enjoy your stay. You are right, winter is our busiest season (soon to kick off again). Summer is fast becoming a busy time also with all manners of activities like cycling and tramping in one of the many national park walks nearby. Maybe a jet boat ride or white water raft for the more adventurous.
Thank you again for your comment. Luenne and I appreciate them.

Kindest regards

A fantastic lodge that had great rooms, facilities and at perfect location. Hosts Alex and Leunne are very friendly and helpful. They provided great local knowledge on attractions and tourism information. Breakfast is available for an affordable price and includes, hot meals, cereals, toast, muffins, juice, wonderful coffee and yummy porridge in the dinning/lounge area. It is a wonderful atmosphere and we enjoyed relaxing at the fire place and games area. The whole family enjoyed our stay there.
