We happened to be checking in to the Top 10 Camp Ground at Geraldine when I noticed the advertisement for Peter Aldous Astronomer and his observatory. Unfortunately the night was too cloudy to observe the night sky but the observatory and the equipment in it is truly amazing. Peter is an expert who can translate the mysteries of astronomy and the technology of telescopes with practised ease.

I thoroughly recommend a visit for anyone interested in discovering the incredible wonders of the universe and the equipment used to observe and photograph it.

I arrived in Geraldine and didn't know anything about the place. But it turned out to be a very interesting day thanks to the highlight of stargazing at the Geraldine Observatory with Peter! I just rang him spontanously and we could just show up at his place. It's amazing what you get to see through the telescope! Peter explained everything about planets, clusters, nebulas, galaxies and so on. You could ask him anything and got a satisfying answer! Was an experience I really appreciate lots! Such a personal encounter with professional knowledge. Great thing to do in Geraldine and it works by donation, so be generous, folks :)

Going to this observatory is an amazing experience! It opens your eyes to many objects in the night sky , such as planets or even distant galaxies! Highly recommend for any one who has an interest in astronomy or is wanting to see what the night sky holds. The host is also lovely, and knows how to work his telescope to make sure you have an enjoyable experience. All he asks is for a generous donation, but for that you get to see many amazing things !

We found the Geraldine Observatory at the hillside home of Peter and Wyn Aldous just a couple of minutes from the centre of this small country town. Was pleasantly surprised that the owners, described as amateurs, were the opposite - very professional. We were put at ease right away as Peter demonstrated his impressive array of equipment and knowledge for us to view the universe above: star clusters, constellations and planets were all described in detail. It was obvious that he had been around in the astronomy world for a very long time. Our two hour visit just flew and if we had had more time we could have observed and listened for much longer.

We were delighted to discover that there was no set charge for our visit and only a small donation was expected which went to the local astronomy club. This observatory will definitely be on our programme for a future visit, thank you Peter and Wyn

Geraldine has so much to offer - and one of the highlights was the Geraldine Observatory, hosted by Peter and Wyn Aldous. Peter has more knowledge in his cranium than the Oval Office had in it's entirety - and the only piece of technology missing at Peter's observatory is a direct USB interface between Peters brain and those fortunate enough to spend time with him.

Peter is friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and has a passion for astronomy which is almost as long as his life. As he has retired now, his time is spent fully enjoying his hobby and sharing it with others. Whilst entry to the observatory is free, Peter is also supporting the establishment and development of the South Canterbury Astronomers Group and any donations made are gifted to this cause.

An awesome nights; suitable for anyone with an enquiring mind, children who want to learn or someone who just enjoys good old fashioned humour!
