Mt Dobson boasts one of the true best catchments of powder snow in the south Canterbury region, and August / September is the month to go check it out -we went from staying in Timaru, an hours drive to the carpark. We couldn't make it on the Saturday and went to Roundhill, but Sunday Mt.Dobson was THE place to be. Even in my non rocker skis, which are carvers, but not fat powder skis, I was floating over the tops of the snow and enjoying some of the best powder snow ever experienced not in the Wanaka region.
Mt Dobson, is a friendly and easily accessible field, that can host a number of people, and still one does not end up in a queue. The runs are a mix of easy to challenging and fantastic gullies, and easy for ski touring off the top lift and along the ridges. The lifties are friendly, as are the staff in the little cafe- food is easily ordered as the menu is small, but it works well, easy also to take a cooler bag with your own lunch, and a thermos and sit in the sun, the view is a stunner. Highly recommend. I will be back next season with my new powder skis, my friends and cannot wait!

Great little club field. Access road can ice up as part of it is in the shade. Not too big and it doesn't get overly crowded. Not to expensive. If there is fresh snow around then I would head here.

Dobson is great, we've made the long trip down there several times to ski, and have always loved it. The access road is mostly OK, on a par with most, and better than many, and is always very well groomed. The base buildings are a jumble of huts, but we are not there to sit inside, we are there to ski! That is where Dobson excels. A large open bowl with a variety of terrain, lots of space and not many people, with lovely dry snow. Great for kids with a large uncrowded beginners area. Last Thursday was exceptional, with 50cm fresh powder, and I'm sure the whoops of joy could be heard all over the country! But all of the days we have spent there have been great. If what you want is to sit in a pretentious place and drink lattees, or stand in queues for 30 minutes, then go elsewhere, but if you want great skiing the Dobsoni is well worth a try.

We drove up to look, but did not ski....purely to acquaint ourselves. There are good slopes and runs, with a triple chair and a pommel. A platter for the beginners. Few people using the field, and there were quite a few rocks starting to show. I was very impressed with the access road...altho very narrow, it is well cared for and was 15 km but not very bumpy ( a metal, unsealed surface, but very firm). Some marvellous views on the way up but the field itself does not really face the full view. Looks like it would be a fast ride!
