Mt Dobson boasts one of the true best catchments of powder snow in the south Canterbury region, and August / September is the month to go check it out -we went from staying in Timaru, an hours drive to the carpark. We couldn't make it on the Saturday and went to Roundhill, but Sunday Mt.Dobson was THE place to be. Even in my non rocker skis, which are carvers, but not fat powder skis, I was floating over the tops of the snow and enjoying some of the best powder snow ever experienced not in the Wanaka region.
Mt Dobson, is a friendly and easily accessible field, that can host a number of people, and still one does not end up in a queue. The runs are a mix of easy to challenging and fantastic gullies, and easy for ski touring off the top lift and along the ridges. The lifties are friendly, as are the staff in the little cafe- food is easily ordered as the menu is small, but it works well, easy also to take a cooler bag with your own lunch, and a thermos and sit in the sun, the view is a stunner. Highly recommend. I will be back next season with my new powder skis, my friends and cannot wait!
