“Cosy and plenty of room”
Reviewed December 13, 2011

Arthur's Pass doesn't have much accommodation so we booked a whole cottage for 3 of us. This was good value and we had plenty of room. The decor is a bit institutional, but the cottage was clean and well equipped. Unfortunately we had appalling weather - it was bone dry on the Christchurch side of the mountains but bucketed for 24 hours at Arthur's Pass - absolute stair-rods the entire time. There was a wood-burning stove and plentiful supply of wood so the cottage was very cosy and warm. The plus side of the rain was that the Devil's Punchbowl waterfall was spectacular. There is some noise from the trains, but the rain just about drowned it out.

So, I have not stayed in very many hostels and I was slightly worried about spending a night in the middle of a national park at a place I've never seen. But Mountain House was great - its purpose built and has everything you need. The rooms are in great condition and it feels solid - lots of light, sturdy beds, and good quality doors and locks. The bathrooms are very clean and obviously well maintained. The kitchen area is very tidy and there is lots of space so that multiple groups can be in there all at once without getting in each others way. The staff is super helpful and friendly as well.

There's not a lot of choice in Arthur's pass for accommodation, but that doesn't mean that what's there has to be substandard. In general, the hostels in New Zealand are of a much better standard than elsewhere in the world. By New Zealand standard, Mountain House is one of the best hostels in the country. I stayed in one of the miner's cottages up on the hill. And while it was a literally hike to get up and down the mountain, the accommodations were outstanding considering the price. The unit I was I was self-contained and everything was clean. The beds were comfortable and rooms were spacious. I would definitely stay again. In fact, I recommended it to my parents who do NOT stay in hostels.

We spent three nights in Cottage #3, booking the entire cottage for the two of us, off season. The cottage has three bedrooms, two of which were locked off, and a sleepout out the back...I wouldn't want to be the poor sucker sleeping out there though, especially in the cold!

We arrived to a blazing fire in the wood burning stove and a seemingly endless supply of firewood, much appreciated in June. The cottage is spacious and well equipped, but I personally would find it uncomfortably crowded with ten people, which is the advertised maximum for this particular cottage.

The kitchen is utilitarian and stark with stainless steel countertops, but it's reasonably well equipped, and probably perfect for catering to groups. This was the first accommodation in NZ we encountered that didn't provide milk, which we sorely missed the following morning when we made coffee.

The dining room has two tables which seat eight, and the living room has two sofas arranged around the wood burning stove. The living area could really use a few reading lamps. The miniature lamp provided was comical and basically useless.

Our particular bedroom contained a smallish bed (double) which was a bit of a squish, but Arthur's Pass is very cold in winter, so snuggling worked in our favor. The room could easily accommodate a larger bed and the bed could really use some blankets! Winter visitors need more than a basic light weight duvet. There was an an electric heater in the bedroom, but it didn't warm the room particularly well and we were cold when not in front of the fire in the living room. If there was ever a place that could use an electric blanket, this is it.

The cottage has two bathrooms, arranged dorm-style, clearly intended to cater for communal living, with one shower/toilet combo, one shower room and one separate toilet/sink.

There's not a huge number of places to choose from in Arthur's Pass, but Mountain House suited our needs. What it lacked in style and warmth it made up for in rustic charm and character.

After shopping around a bit I chose this place for the night in Arthur’s Pass. I had a private double room with shared facilities in the newer complex. There is another complex on the other side of the road which looks very different, a lot older. The rooms (private and dorms) along with the reception and kitchen are around a nice courtyard just off the road. It is a modern structure with full height windows, and good, probably fairly new beds. My room as well as toilet and shower facilities were clean and excellently maintained. There is a nice lounge on the top floor with couches, desks, DVDs and internet. WiFi (for pay) was available in my room. My bike could go indoors across the street. Washing machines are available. The receptionist was very friendly, happily answering all my questions and offer help. The road gets quiet by night and is no issue at all. There is the occasional train though. There seems to be a premium added to prices for everything throughout Arthur’s Pass and this doesn’t stop at the door of the Mountain House. Given the state and quality of the accommodation value for money remains reasonable. I was offered a ‘low carbon travel’ discount. The real downside is the poorly sound proof walls, as I heard a lot more from my neighbours than I wanted, and they certainly were not loud or indiscreet. I could hear them come and go, talking, watching a film and having sex. So I guess for light sleepers, there is a risk people next door might not be comatose.

Our 1st night in NZ. Arrived at sunset, nice room with view of the surrounding bush and Kea. Kitchen was awesome- made pasta dish with fresh herbs from the garden. Nice and quiet. Bathrooms clean but sometimes shower leaked into floor. Staff friendly, was able to park car in lot while after we checked out and hiked avalanche peak. Overall totally worth the 73 kiwi dollars
