“Cheap but cold, noisy and for sale.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 23, 2013

Arthur's Pass is the best place to see Kea which we were very keen to do (and were not disappointed). Accomodation is pretty limited in Arthur's pass so we stayed here for one night before moving on to Christchurch.

The Good:
Very cheap - for the size of the cabin its excellent value
Current owner was nice (although there was a for sale sign out the front so this may change shortly)

The Bad:
There is a train line across the road for primarily freight that runs frequently and all through the night. I know others said this wasn't a problem but our cabin actually shook and rattled every time a train passed. There are also heavy lorries passing along the state highway just outside. This did not give us a good nights sleep.
Its cold. These are older flimsy cabins that have basically no thermal insulation at all and so they leak heat at a pretty fast rate. Whenever we came back after the heaters had been off for even a couple of hours it was freezing.

Excellent 2 bedroom accommodation for family with 2 kids. Warm, comfortable and complete with kitchenette. Free wifi and helpful friendly service. Don't reccomend eating at the local cafe/restaurant though. Food isnt great and it is expensive. Next time we would take own food or try the pub.

We stayed when it was pouring rain and didn't get cabin fever. Would stay again.

Room Tip: We stayed in cabin 7, reccomend it for a family.

A nice little place that seems more like a mountain cottage than a hotel room. Comfortably holds 4 adults with the queen bed adjacent to the living room and the separate bedroom. The train does pass through town, but unlike others we never heard it. Not cheap but there are limited options in Arthur's Pass

We stayed for a night on the way to Christchurch to catch a flight back home. The cabins are perfect, cosy and quaint with plenty of heating and plenty of blankets on the beds for when the weather turns cold. It is not far to the town and we ate at the Wobbly Kea. The train line is just across the road with trains rumbling past during the night, although you can hear them it did not spoil our sleep.

Affordable simple accommodation. Shared a queen bed which was comfortable. Room was well heated (weather was pretty awful). A 10 minute walk to the shop/restaurants. Very helpful owner who found out for us re road conditions/closures due to the bad weather.

Room Tip: If you want to stagger home from the pub choose something closer to the village. Make sure you have...

we had booked this for an overnight stay before a mid morning flight home, as we were doing a long drive from queenstown up the west coast and did not think we would make it to christchurch in time. as it turned out the kids all wished we could have stayed longer.

the room was cosy and the gas fire was appreciated as was the electric heater

the views were great including sight of the trains rumbling past

the manager was ever so helpful sorting out cooker problems at dinner time, helping us with some extra freezer storage and cheefully waving us off in the morning

We enjoyed a lovely warm welcome on arrival. The accommodation was spacious with a combined lounge/kitchen with separate bathroom and bedroom. It was all very clean and warm. It is an older fibro building with parking right at the door. It is just over a kilometre into the town for food and petrol. The train line is just across the road; we were excited to watch the freight trains roll by.
