We had a truly wonderful stay at the Wilderness Lodge. They present the best of the local area so well.

The Lodge facilities were excellent. The dining room and common areas have teriffic views and are nicely done. There is also a good library with lots of interesting material on the ecology of the area, New Zealand, etc. The food and service were delightful. They have an excellent bar for drinks and wine before and after dinner. The rooms were very nice and fit with the spirit of a first class, outdoor-oriented lodge.

We found the staff to be informative and helpful, from Dave, the manager, to all of the others. They went out of their way to make this a teriffic stay. Dr. Gerry McSweeny, one of the owners and a leading New Zealand environmentalist, hand sheered a Merino sheep during a discussion of their goals with the farm and nature reserve.

The activities offered were really outstanding. There are guided hikes and activities which are included in the price that are fun and informative. They have marked trails around the Lodge which were interesting. More extended outings are offered at extra cost. We did one hike/kyaking trip which was spectacular and well worth the cost. Our guide for that was Niki, who was so knowledgable and thoughtful.

We did not want to leave!! What a place.

This ecolodge is first rate all the way around. The lodge is beautiful and immaculately maintained. Rooms are not elegant but are well designed for an active stay---fresh, contemporary with outside access, views, etc.

Breakfast and dinner are included and the food was tremendous. We also had a picnic lunch prepared one day and that was a treat, too.

The hikes and tours that are included in the base price were great. There are also well marked trails for hiking around the station that vary in length and intensity. There are longer tours/hikes that are available at an extra cost. There are several each day that they might juggle around depending upon weather. We went to Castle Rock and it was fantastic.

Fresh fruit was in our room upon arrival. Snacks/coffee are always available in the lounge (we were there just before Easter and the had delicous fresh made hot cross buns one day) and they also have a well stocked bar.

The staff was a delight. The manager , Dave, is really involved, led one of the hikes; the owner of this lodge and also the Wilderness Lodge Lake Moeraki was on hand one evening and hand sheared a Mirano sheep for us; the guide to Castle Rock, Niki, was especially outstanding.

Finally, they have rain coats, boots, etc available for everyone, drying rooms and washers and dryers.

Don't miss this place if you are in the vicinity on the south island.

We just returned from New Zealand, and spent one night at the lodge. It is in a beautiful mountainside setting just east of Arthur's Pass-- about two hours west of Christchurch. It is also conveniently located just a short distance from the main highway; but you are never aware of the highway being nearby once you are in the lodge. The lodge (restaurant and lounge) and all rooms have exceptional views of beautiful mountains across the valley. Also, all rooms are part of the lodge, so it's easy to reach the lounge and dining room in all kinds of weather. The staff were very friendly and pleasant. The food was excellent. The lodging was expensive, but I didn't see any other comparable alternatives nearby. There are several hiking trails, and also a family-owned sheep ranch close by. We also stayed at the Lake Moeraki Wilderness Lodge (owned by same family), and it was not difficult to travel between the two lodges in under six hours.
