We arrived here during a howling gale in January and were very pleased to find a nice welcome for 3 wet windswept bikers and a clean, comfortable and reasonably priced room available. The owner even provided a tarp to cover the bike seats in a space at the back of the chalet so that the Kea didn't peck at them!
A lovely surprise were the veggie options, the veggie burger was great, good wine and we ate by the roaring fire where I was able to dry my boots. Had a drink and chat with the owner and 'semi vegetarian' chef late on and felt right at home. Breakfast was included - toast and fruit, juice and tea/coffee which suits us. I gave some advice regarding the flakey wifi and when we called in for a coffee 2 weeks later on the way back over it seemed much better. Would definitely stay again next time we're over from the UK. Highly recommended.

This was our first stop on a tour of the South Island. The place is more like a pub. Our room was basic but clean. We were supposed to be sharing bathroom facilities but we were the only ones to use it. We wandered around the other places to eat, but decided to eat at Arthurs Chalet and were so pleased we did. The meal was delicious and very filling. I had the steak and my husband had the chicken. We had a couple of drinks at the bar and met the owner who was lovely and very friendly and spent time chatting with us. Breakfast was as expected, cereal and toast, tea/coffee but no complaints about it. Would stay there again, but doubt we will ever visit this part of the world again!!

We were looking for a place to break our journey between Kaikoura and Franz Josef and elected to stay here (not many other options). The hotel was clean but basic. The staff and service were both efficient. The room was quite basic with the communal fridge located in a hallway outside our room. Basically, the hotel is simple, no frills, but a good price.
The one surprising thing was that the food in the restaurant was very good and it also had quite a nice pub feel bar.
So, if like us, you are looking for a place to stay in this region, then it is worth considering. It also has quite nice views of the pass itself and there is lovely walk close by up to a lovely waterfall.
