My husband and I stayed at The Couples Resort for the first time in late April 2007 and loved it. We would have stayed longer, but during that particular time, they had an enormous amount of swag flies and mosquitoes. I would recommend that if you are sensitive to the outdoor nature aspects, perhaps book another time of the year.

We stayed in a Boutique Spa Villa and the accommodations were wonderful. We had our own driveway, floor to ceiling wood burning fireplace, king sized 4 poster bed, leather sofa, DVD/CD player, microwave, kettle, coffee maker, mini fridge, ironing board ... the bathroom was very large! We had a sauna/steam room, bidet and a couple’s shower with jets on each side. There was also a screened in porch and our own patio with a view of the lake. Did I mention they have an extensive DVD list? You can rent up 2 movies within a 24 (or 48) hour period .. I can’t recall the policy. We didn’t have much time for movies though. We also went for a canoe ride (first time) at no charge. There is a small fee for the motor boat and mountain bikes.

We were lucky enough to be granted an early check-in and Deborah (the office manager) was extremely polite, helpful and very patient. I spent so much time on the phone with her, making sure I picked the right type of accommodation. At no time did she make me feel rushed throughout my never ending questions!

We had dinner and breakfast in the dining room (included in price), but you can also have your meals via room service. The food was good, although appetizers were on the small side. A 4 course dinner meal is included (menu choices on their website). I would have liked to see a cake or cheesecake on the menu, but I do believe their menu choices change. There is a choice of entrees for breakfast and everything tasted great! I was still a bit hungry after our delicious eggs Benedict and embarrassed to say I ordered a Belgian waffle (a fellow reviewer had highly recommended them). The server had to ask if this was ok, so I felt a bit awkward about that.

All in all, a wonderful stay and we will certainly be back again. The staff was very accommodating in allowing my husband and I to see different suites for future reference.

Absolutely loved the place and look forward to going again. I was supposed to be going to the Caribbean with some friends but they left it too late and we couldn't get anything. To compensate my husband said he would take me away for a few days and after searching the internet we agreed to give Bear Trail a try.

Initially we booked for 2 nights (sun and mon) as I was concerned that we would be stuck if we didn't like it. After the first night we booked for the tuesday night also. The reception staff were extremely accommodating - especially Deborah - and let us look at some of the other rooms available for the tuesday night.

We ended up staying in the Grand Exotic (India) for all 3 nights as didn't feel that any of the other rooms were better - they all looked wonderful and each type has different advantages. Our room had a hot tub on the balcony as well as a huge jacuzzi next to the bed that could easily fit 4 people - so plenty of room for 2!! There were 2 lovely deep sofas, enough room for 2 to lay together on the 3-seater!! The TV is an ordinary one - the master suites had a plasma TV but no outdoor hot tub, there was a DVD player and you just sign out DVD's at reception. A CD player would have been nice - these are in the cottages - so I would take one with me next time as it would have been nice to have music playing while in the hot tub or jacuzzi. The rooms were very clean, bed extremely comfortable, it was handy to have the fridge to cool our wine and beer, the tea/coffee/hot chocolate were unlimited. The fire was lovely and there was plenty of wood in the room and outside in the corridor.

The food was fantastic and beautifully served. We have eaten at many restaurants all over the world but my husband thought the meal on the sunday night was the best he had ever had. Breakfast was also delicious with plenty of choice. We bought some bread and cold meats from the local supermarket for snacks but I couldn't eat anything else as the 2 meals were plenty enough for me. The staff in the dining room were very friendly and accommodating, we didn't have any complaints but one woman sent her main course back one night as she didn't like it, they gave her another dish without any problems and seemed genuinely concerned that she didn't like it.

We went horse riding which was great fun and the staff at the stables were very friendly. My husband had never been on a horse and I hadn't been on one since 1983, it might be a bit tame if you are an accomplished rider but it was ideal for us just going on the trail for an hour. We had a drive to Algonquin Park, and also walked on the trails around the resort. The lake was frozen so we also had a walk on it (plus a snowball fight), we took our ice skates but never went on the rink as we are a bit wobbly (we are English so didn't learn to skate until we came over here and still need sides to hold on to), but lots of other people were taking advantage of it.

The wine with the meals is expensive but I have to agree that they have to make their money somewhere. They charge $25 above the LCBO price but then there is a tax and service charge on top of that - you can take your own wine for a $25 corkage fee and there shouldn't be any other charges on top of that so it is probably cheaper to do that. The wine we had was delicious and you have to spoil yourself sometimes, you can also save the bottle for the next night if you don't drink it all. We bought our own wine from the local LCBO for getting drunk in our room!!

There are 3 pool tables, table tennis and fussball table, plus a selection of board games in the games room. We spent some time in there and had a few drinks from the bar.

I had a chocolate body wrap at the spa - highly recommended. I would advise people to book the spa before going to the resort as I could only get in on the last morning - it would have been lovely to go back to the room afterwards and enjoy the relaxed feeling rather than having to drive back to Toronto.

We didn't use the gym but it looked well equipped and clean, and obviously the pool was closed for the winter. The only thing I wasn't keen on were the paintings everywhere by the original owner. She has her studio at the resort and you can buy the paintings, personally I thought they were dreadful but from the comments in her books some people think they are wonderful - bit too Group of 7'ish for me!!

I wasn't expecting such a wonderful relaxing break, especially when I was miserable about not going to the Caribbean. Ultimately I think I had a better time at Bear Trail, it certainly rekindled the romance and gave us the opportunity to actually talk to each other properly - no work or kids in the way!! I look forward to going again, hopefully in the autumn as the area will be spectacular with the changing colours.

My husband and I (ages 37 and 38) just returned from Bear Trail on the 10th of March. We were there for 3 nights; from Thursday through Sunday, and I have to say this was an amazing 3-day getaway.
We stayed in one of the Master Suites. Too many amenities in this room to list (their website lists all of it, or you can phone and front desk will tell you all about their rooms). We figured we'd spend the money and go all out for us for a change, and we were happy we did.
The service and the food were excellent for room service and for the dinning room.
The x-country skiing was fantastic, and so were the trails for snow shoeing. The equipment we rented from the ski hut was in good condition.
The resort includes breakfast and dinner, so you may like to pack some munchies or fruit for in your room in case you are hungry in the mid-afternoon. Lunch can also be ordered in the dinning room in case you need it.
The staff are extremely accommodating to any request we had.
I have absolutely no complaints - in fact, our stay was much better than we had expected!
I have been to several 5 star resorts in the Caribbean, and would have to say that I think that 3 days at Bear Trail was more enjoyable and more relaxing and more pampering than 3 days in the sunny south.
We will definitely be back next winter!

My husband and I stayed at the bear trail Feb 25th and we have been on a cloud 9 since our return. We were first there for our honeymoon in 2003 and we loved it then, but thought we should go somewhere else for a change. We don't get away often seeing we have a little one at home and we both work different shifts - WE ARE SO GLAD WE WENT BACK!!!
We stayed in the master suites - Gaugin.
I can't even begin to tell you how luxurious it was. We felt like royalty. The master suites are a must. They have the toilet/bidet room seperate from the double vanity sink with a dressing table for the ladies! The shower along with most of everything in the bathroom was a beautiful marble. It is a euro shower and also a steam shower (we loved that). The suite has an indoor jacuzzi as well as an private outdoor hotub on the private baclony, overlooking the crisp, white snow. The bed was incredible in this suite - very comfortable especially if you love down filled like we do. It had a huge slate fireplace and a 52" flat panel tv (my husband loved that)! We had our own little sitting area, which we enjoyed a nice bottle of wine while we were getting ready for dinner. We signed up for the last seating at 8:oo pm - that way we got to enjoy more of our room.
The food has improved 300% since 2003. My husband agrees with me that it was the best meal we have had in a really long time. Wine is a little pricy, but they have to make their $$ somehow.
We were very impressed when we ariived by noon and registered to go cross country skiing we also found our that our room was available - THIS MADE OUR TRIP.

The service was awesome, very friendly and helpful. Kelly in the dining room is super.

As for the cross country skiing - there isn't much winter left, but I highly recommend that if you are even a little but interested in skiing you have to go. The trails through the park were the best I have ever skied on and I can't wait to go back next winter to partake in it all again!

Have fun - we sure did. If you are looking to put a little spark back in your relationship, this is sure the place to accomplish that.

We stayed in a Junior Suite from January 14-19, 2007. We had a great time!!! The resort is quite homey. The rooms were very clean and useful. The bed was TERRIFIC!!! We had fires in our fireplace everyday(plenty of firewood) and jacuzzi's also(too shallow for our taste but we still used it). The staff was very helpful, although the front desk was very rehearsed. We took advantage of the free DVD rental, the horseback riding as well as the dog sledding and had a terrific time. The staff at the farm was SUPER FRIENDLY. Our only concern was for the dogs(we have a dog at home) being fed NONAME Loblaws dog food, which seemed to go through their systems very poorly(smelly and sloppy). Better food should be provided for the dogs, although the horses appeared to be well maintained. The food was GREAT!!!!! Lots of selections and no rush to finish your dinner quickly. The dinner staff was polite and friendly. We played in the games room several nights also. Got extra pillows when we asked for them. We took advantage of the room service feature(at no extra expense) every morning for breakfast. The food arrived EXACTLY on time every day and piping hot. NOTHING was incorrect. We truly enjoyed ourselves and have recommended it already to many people. We plan to return in the fall. If you have any questions about this resort, please ask. I will be very honest.
