There has never been much reason to visit Zhou Shan, unless one is passing through on the way to its famous neighbor Putuoshan. The arrival of the Sheraton changes things a bit. It's big, grand, rather stunning, and changes this trip to the outback to a rather luxurious experience. The Sheraton has become my base for each visit to Putuoshan and its surrounding islands.

Location: The hotel's website markets the property as if it is in the heart of the action. Not so true - rather, it is in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by new government buildings, hills, and the sea. This all provides for excellent views from every room in the property, but guests shouldn't expect off site dining or entertainment options, unless they are prepared for a 25 minute drive to the nearest village, Shenjiamen, a lovely town with scores of seafood restaurants, an interesting night market, and trails for pretty hikes into the hills.

Service: Check in and check out is pretty standard - not really fast or efficient, but not slow enough to complain about either. Staff are super friendly though from the doorman to reception, and greet guests with smiles and offers of help.

There seems to be a lack of training in some areas. Waiters and managers in the restaurants were not familiar with the hotel chain's discount card system, and each time I finished a meal, it took 20 to 30 minutes from the time I asked for the bill until the time I had a correct bill to sign.

The club lounge also had some hygiene issues that were a bit surprising. At breakfast and evening cocktail time, hot dishes were left to cool until guests appeared, then a staff member would turn on the hot plate to warm the food back up. This led to luke warm and slimy bacon, sausage, fish, and other items, probably unsafe to eat or very close to it. The sushi and sashimi were also luke warm and dry around the edges, the result of being left out much too long.

Rooms: Guest rooms are new, accented in warm tones, comfortably large, and feature pleasant balconies and very comfortable bathrooms. The beds are Sheraton's classic sweet sleeper beds, so guests can expect a night of great comfort.

Facilities: Two outdoor resort style pools make this hotel a fantastic summer destination. For visitors who travel on other seasons, the hotel's indoor pool is also a pleasant option, with a hot tub just next to it for those who aren't fond of swimming in the chilly water. The gym is sufficient, though the spa and pool areas aren't quite complete and may need another couple months before the finishing touches are in place.

Food: The buffet restaurant on the first floor is ok. Western dishes aren't entirely authentic, though the chefs appear to make a good effort. The Italian restaurant opened a couple months ago and has excellent food. We were very surprised by how tasty the cheese soup was, as well as the pizza and pasta. The risotto was disappointing though as it tasted and looked more like Chinese fried rice than anything Italian. Club lounge food left a lot to be desired, especially the chocolates, but the drinks were tasty.

Since the Sheraton is new, some challenges can be expected, but it seems that the hotel is off to a good start, and I highly recommend it for anyone visiting the area.
