“Lovely hotel and excellent staff”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 3, 2009

I visited Hotel Astarea May 14th for a week with my husband and two friends. Our rooms were very small but had a lovely view and sunny balcony. They were kept clean and the towels were changed daily but did get very hot as the air conditioning didn't seem very efficient. I didn't use the pool as it was indoors and I was informed that it wasn't very warm. It was a shame that there wasn't anywhere to sit outside on sunloungers but the beaches were nice even though mostly pebbles.
There was entertainment five nights a week consisting of a very good guitarist who also sang with help from backing tapes. There was plenty of choice at meal times although the fruit juice left a lot to be desired.
As has been mentioned before there is a steep hill up to the road to catch the local buses but the hotel has a mini bus to take you to the top. It is worth catching the local bus to Cavtat just a short drive away which is also very pretty. Also you can get the local bus into Dubrobnik or if you prefer you can go by boat from the harbour at Mlini. It was very hot while we were there but even so we enjoyed walking around the wall in Dubrovnik - especially stopping along the way to enjoy a nice cool beer!
If going back to Dubrovnik would definately consider going back to the Astarea.

The Astarea is set in a lovely location. There are shops around and nice restaurants - i would suggest one called 'Laterna' they are friendly and good with children as i have three ( a baby, and two toddlers) and were very good with them. A supermarket is about a 10 minute walk away.

The beach really is lovely! Its not busy and over crowded like other beaches. Its a pebble beach and the water is lovely and clear. Although people tend to hire the sun beds for a day and leave there towels so they can go for a spot of lunch and then come back again - a good idea!

The pool in the hotel is not out side :(. Its not on the top floor and is cold, small and to be honest quite tired. That is a bit of a disapointment if you wanted to stay at the hotel, not a problem for me and my family - but maybe for others!

Great hotel. Staff friendly, good location - although at bottom of a steep hill so not great if walking is a problem and you want to go and catch a bus; good facilities (although they're not big on telling you what facilities they have), beuatiful area and views. Easy to get into Dubrovnik. If you go for half board option the food is good , its a typical buffet affair with mix of local and international food, lots of it, whilst its good it isn't amazing (but is good value for money). Breakfast was good. Room was good, only downside was sound insulation - could hear neighbours talking, watching tv etc which wasn't good the morning they got up at 6am. Swimming pool is really nice, it's salt water rather than chlorine which made a refreshing change. Choice of beaches very close by. Mlini itself is nice to stroll around and has good cafes/bars.

What a find the Astrea Hotel is in the picturesque village of Mlini which is situated halfway between the airport & Dubrovnik approx 10 kms from both. The hotel has commanding views across the bay and is virtually located on the beach. It was very clean, had good facilities and the food was adequate.
I do agree with other reveiws the balcony bar is a beautiful place to have a drink and watch the sun set, it is an amazing sight. My husband always forgot his camera & had to rush back to our room to get it.
It has got separate facilities for Saga guests & they do have a balcony & rooms we were not allowed into. They were older guests who needed to feel safe & they had paid a lot more. They were very friendly & it did not affect us at all, they came on our balcony bar area to chat & were quite funny.
A short 2/3 minute walk from the hotel along the flat coastal road which brings you into the beautiful Mlini village, which nestles around a small harbour. From here you can catch the regular & inexpensive boat service to Dubrovnik and the nearby coastal resorts and Islands.
You also have the advantage of the lovely walk again along the coastal road to other villages that have good bars & resturants.
I would not say Milni is ideal for the really young ones but it is for a romantic get away or honeymoons.
I have recommended the Hotel Asterea to everyone & would not hesitate to go back.
To be honest I cannot wait ,it is the best place I have ever been!

Hotel is in a lovely location with beautiful sea views.Food & service were very good but don't get caught "smuggling" fruit from the restaurant (although the locals have this down to a fine art ! ) Main criticism was the price charged for use of the sauna----charges are displayed so we discovered but in small print & not obvious places. Four of us had the sauna for around 20 minutes & were charged 280 kuna, roughly £35 although this was reduced to 140 kuna when I complained at reception (I'm sure this was only conceded because guests were waiting to check in & the receptionist wanted to avoid embarrassment )
Having said that we had a great time.Would recommend car hire for a couple of days.Mostar (Bosnia ) is an easy drive as is Montenegro but you will need passports for both & euros for the latter.

We had a fabulous holiday staying at the Astaria Hotel in Mlini.

The walk down to the beach is very picturesque and we were very lucky to have fine weather in October.

The coastline is stunning with beautiful greenery right down to the beach area and the architecture is something to marvel at.

It is a struggle to walk uphill to get a bus to nearby villages and Dubrovnik particularly if you are getting on a bit.

It is not a problem though because its much more fun and not too unreasonable to journey by water taxi not far from the back of the hotel.

A visit to Dubrovnik is essential. What a beautiful and interesting place.

We did feel sad though to see the bombed out hotels still there as a result of the war. Such a melancholy stain on such a beautiful place.

We were well looked after at the Astaria and used the excellent large swimming pool pretty well every day.

We are older travellers and have been around a bit but all in all we think that this was perhaps the best holiday that we have ever had.

The previous 2 reviews are spot on, though should point out something that could upset some people. The Piano Bar is located next to reception in the main hotel block and most nights runs some form of loud music until at least 11:00 pm. This resonates through at least the first and second floors, so if you think you are in for a nice early quiet night - forget it! Also during our stay there was a wedding reception on the Saturday night, that used a live band who eventually switched their amplifiers off at 4:15 in the morning!! Besides all this, there seem to be a lot of tour buses parking up next to the hotel throughout the day and the drivers just leave the engines running. So take some earplugs, unless you are deaf.
