I tagged along with my sister and her family to Serfaus earlier this month and we stayed at the Wellness-Residenz Schalber. I ski mostly in the Western US and Canada and have skied a bit in Switzerland. Serfaus was a completely new experience for me, which after four days I am ready to return again soon. This review would be especially beneficial for anyone who has never been to Serfaus, as it not only covers this hotel, but how it interfaces with the overall experience at Serfaus.

The brilliance of Serfaus and specifically this hotel is that they have looked at the skiing experience from the customer's point-of-view and they have optimized that experience. From the Dorfbahn (a darling four-stop subway) that takes you almost directly to the gondola boarding area, to the afternoon "tea" in the restaurant, to the luxurious spa, every detail has been thought out to smooth out any rough edges for the guests. While it is not a ski-in-ski-out property, there is no driving nor any long walks in ski boots.

We did not want to stay an entire week, and this property is one of the few who allow stays outside the week-long Saturday-to-Saturday format. It comes as no surprise that Saturday is a very chaotic day with traffic jams on the limited roads to and from the resort. The dominant nationality in Serfaus depends on the European school holiday schedule. The day we left, there was a huge infusion of Dutch.

Serfaus is on one street town, and the Schalber is the first property as you come into town. The gondolas are on the other end of the street. The first stop on the Dorfbahn is about 100 meters from the hotel. I literally never walked through the town of Serfaus, as the hotel catered to my every need outside of skiing,

Do not come here for après-ski. Serfaus is a family resort. The ski school is large and apparently well-respected. The slopes on which the school operates are only a small percentage of the overall mountain so it was easy to get away from the serpentine groups of young skiers. The better lifts (Pezidbahn & Masnerkopfbahn) are closer to Serfaus than to neighboring Fiss and Ladis, and minimized the time to get to the best skiing.

Most of the slopes are above the tree-line, which posed some real challenges during the first two days of skiing which oscillated between total white-out conditions and a maximum visibility of about 25 meters. I didn't care as I was knee-deep in fresh powder. The last two days opened up and were bluebird days, with classic Austrian views straight out of "The Sound of Music".

Speaking of the "The Sound of Music," the design of the hotel is clearly inspired by that aesthetic. There is a remarkably wide range of decorating styles and periods represented throughout the hotel, but they are all done with a complete commitment and, in a surprising way, work together in this environment.

In truth, who cares what the place looks like when you are soaking under the stars in an exquisite salt-water tub, or lounging in a Japanese steam room. The spa was absolute perfection and just an elevator ride away from our room. The spa has an older and a newer section, and although it is not enormous it has a wide variety of heat options that offer something for everyone. There were no children in the "over 16" spa as there was a separate spa for families.

Our room was the capacious "Schalbersuite" a two-bedroom suite with a pull-out bed in the living area located on the fourth floor overlooking the mountains. It was comfortable and well-thought out, with one exception: the room was as hot as a furnace. This was great for drying out the ski paraphernalia, but required us to open multiple windows every night to bring down the temperature to sleep comfortably..

The package included breakfast, a post-ski "afternoon tea" [more accurately a "snack"] and dinner in the restaurant. What a joy to make no decision other than what time we wanted to saunter down to "our" table. The food was was very attractively presented and creatively prepared with enough variation that we did not grow tired of it over the course of four days. Breakfast and "tea" were both served as a buffet, and dinner was a combination of table-service and buffet.

The staff was extremely courteous and helpful and for the most part spoke impeccable English. A gentleman in traditional Austrian dress, who I assume was Herr Schalber, made the rounds at dinner each evening. The presence of a family owner/operator seems to have maintained a high level of service throughout the hotel in a way you would never get at a Starwood property.

So in a nutshell, take me back (not on a Saturday), but please, turn down the heat!

My children and I just spend 5 days at the Schalber.

The Plus: decor of the hotel (many small and cosy areas, with different moods and atmospheres), friendliness and efficiency of the staff, great quality of the food (plus delicious snacks at 4PM), fun kids menu, outstanding wine selection, amazing spa with incredible selection of saunas/steam rooms/relax rooms (even an outside salt water plunge pool and outside pool), great treatments (and possibility to get same day bookings).

The Minus: not located on the slopes (10 minute train ride to the slopes), no ski equipment rental facility in premises, all explanations in the spa (on the front of the various saunas, hammams, ice grotto) are in German (mostly german speaking clientele), rooms and bathrooms rather small (my children and I took turns in the bathroom).

Overall: recommended if you don't mind not having direct access to the slopes.

Room Tip: Unfortunately, the hotels suggests you a room type. I requested a larger suite, but they didn't...

The new part of the spa is the higlight of the hotel. The hotel has different room types. Some are poor. The food is good but average. Because of all the good ratings, we expected an outstanding hotel. For what you pay, you will find better five star hotels in other places.

We stayed here for one night on our way to our honeymoon destination in Italy, We wished it had been longer. We were unable to fault anything. The rooms were very clean and comfortable the staff very friendly and helpful and the food was exceptional. We really felt that we had been treated like royalty. The spa facilities were first class and we were given good advise as to the treatment that would be most beneficial to us. It was pricey but it was a special occasion and were are pleased we stayed here. I got the impression that it was situated out of Serfaus but it was the first hotel we came to as we drove into the village.

We spend five nights in the Schalber hotel for a short break and thought this was just fantastic. Comparing it to other 5* hotels all over the globe, we thought this hotel was just excellent

We stayd in a quite spacious junior-suite, which was very comfortable and had a really authentic Austrian touch including a tiled oven. Rooms have either been renewed not too long ago or are maintained extremely well as everything looks relatively new.

Daily rates include the so-called "Verwöhnpension" which consists of e.g. a welcome drink, extensive breakfast, lunch buffet, afternoon coffee and a 5-course dinner. Food is simply excellent which did not come as a surprise as the restaurant has been given 17 points by Gault Millau. Do try the extensive wine list.

Also included is access to the wellness world which is 3000 m2 in size and has virtually limitless possibilities. Without going into too much detail this was just great!

All-in-all the hotel can meet up with the great 5* hotels in the world (Shangri-La, Mandarin, etc) but adds a very personal touch which you normally only find at smaller residences.
