What a fantastic place! Ancient structure that made us feel right at home with our Clay Society mission. Lots of character, many nooks and crannies, huge fire places, wonderful kitchen with modern appliances and the indoor pool was spectacular. Gorgeous dining room set to the hilt with beautiful dishes, silverware and wine glasses. There were several spacious and smaller bedrooms too. Open beams, the perfume of antiquity and the quaint circular stair cases makes you feel like you're living in the 15th century, and yet you have all of the conveniences of home.
We thoroughly enjoyed meeting the spirit of our medieval counterparts. It was crazy fun to imagine them roaming the place, farming the land and overlooking the hill watching the beautiful countryside. If you want an experience of an old English Manor House to remember, this is certainly the place!
We all had a great time at Hagg Hill Hall, this was most of the parties 2nd visit, love the pool and hot tubs, we will be back.
Brilliant amenities and pleanty of space for 12 adults 4 children and 2 babies/ toddlers. Recommended
Great property for a large family gathering with spacious ornate bedrooms and bathrooms. The pool was a big hit with the children and adults. It is a really good size - easily accommodated six children, eight adults and the numerous inflatables. Much fun had by all. The hot tubs are a real treat. The garden and play boat were great places for the children to play. Plenty of outdoor space for games.
No words can be quite enough to describe the excellence of Hagg Hill Hall.it stands out immensely as probably the best ancient house in England where you can enjoy a stay as guests and be transported back in time as though you have just come out of Dr Who's tardis.
Every room is absolutely remarkable steeped in history and its a pleasure to explore all the nooks and crannies in this wonderful ancient building. The lovely furnishing is all in keeping with the house. There is every facility and the owner (a great character) does everything to make your stay a memorable occasion. We will definitely come back to stay here again.
If you're in to centuries-old manors, Hagg Hill is for you. What a thoughtfully restored property, and the vistas from the hill are spectacular! Owner Mel is a great host -- full of engaging stories and so accommodating. Hagg Hill was owned by Clays for many generations, so that's why my fellow Clay descendants -- most over age 70 -- and I stayed there. We don't know if we connect to the Hagg Hill Clays, but it was special to stay there regardless. A few words of caution: you'll be staying at a property where steps are iffy. The entrance is below ground -- down some steps that can be tricky for the elderly -- and leads to the common areas (spacious sitting room, great hang-out kitchen, and gorgeous dining room), all of which require going up and down steps. What the website calls "first floor" bedrooms are actually on the second floor, and the second floor bedrooms are on the third floor. Steps have variable tread/riser ratios, and many are windy with tricky grab-holds, so I don't recommend Hagg Hill for anyone who's geriatic or disabled.. The website says there's laundry equipment, but there's only a washer. No dryer -- just a clothes line. Wi fi access is also problematic. The signal comes from the router in the kitchen, but extenders are needed to reach the entire house. There was no way to access the TV in my room or in the sitting room, which was disappointing. We loved Hagg Hill because of its history, but other issues were a problem.
Always exciting pulling into a new place to stay and this one certainly gives the wow factor.
Exploring the house to find which room you are staying in you will find the most quirky home you have ever stayed.
There are nik naks every where, on every shelf and every wall - more later.
The pool is a great length to give yourself a little muscle exercise (first thing, before the loud ones turn up is a must)
Two lovely big hot tubs will stop you from exploring the countryside, you may just end up drinking fizz and chilling in the outdoor or indoor tubs throughout your stay.
There is a couple of nice walks right outside the house, or you can go and explore the most beautiful Peak District countryside on the doorstep.
The kitchen is a great size to enjoy meeting for breakfast or preparing a meal for all the clan later in the day.... You can always get a caterer in like we did for the Saturday night - highly recomended.
Two bbq's will meet your every need - gas or charcoal, you decide.
We had the best weather of the year so far for our big birthdays weekend with 16 of us enjoying Melvyn's hospitality.
Melvyn lives in the attached home next door and you can help but fall for his character and charms, which you are certain to receive during your stay. Two big dogs and a little dog will welcome you too without being too chatty! All kept behind a gate so don't worry if you don't like dogs...
There is a brilliant big field to enjoy ball sports - we had some excellent bowls tournaments and the boys enjoyed football and rugby games.
We had little time in the house as the weather was so good, evenings were spent in the big living room playing board games.
All the bedrooms are lovely and you have a difficult choice choosing the rooms, however you must be able to climb stairs, the rooms are on two floors and do twist around and there are a number of little steps around the lower ground floor.
As for all the nik naks!!!! They are everywhere! We actually played a treasure hunt on our last night - I recommend doing this on the first night as it makes you explore all the pieces that Melvyn has collected over the years... like finding the two dons, or the words "The scale of miles"
The dining table looks magnificent but a little impractical with all the silver ware on the table.... We did take most of it off to enjoy a wonderful Saturday night meal - Mixed feelings on whether we should have put it all back, sorry Melvyn.
The garden room was used for meals which is a lovely space to chill and play jigsaws or "Risk" board game tournament.
There is a big Tesco 5 minutes drive away and a small MColls 2 minutes drive away.
Don't think about booking anywhere else if you are all able and want to have a great time with friends or family.
