“Comfortable but could do with an update”

Beds were very comfortable and swimming pool water was perfect temperature to relax after a long days walking, but the bedroom and pool both could do with a make over. All was very clean though which is more important. It is in good position for those walking TMB as it is a couple of kms out of Les Contamines in the right direction for the next morning's walk (for anti clockwise trek anyway!). Not a lot of choice for eating nearby but the hotel restaurant provided a satisfying though unexciting dinner with slow service. Breakfast had plenty of choice and you can boil your own eggs which is good if you like them soft.

Room Tip: Ground floor facing the road you have to leave the balcony door open for air in summer, so would be...

My husband and I stayed here at the end of August for one night - the hotel was a welcome sight after a long first day of hiking the TMB in the pouring rain. Fortunately, the jacuzzi was open til 8pm and was just the thing for our chilled, sore muscles - what a treat!

It seems like this hotel and the surrounding Hameaux du Lay area are most used during the winter ski season, as evidenced by the lack of hustle and bustle around the hotel in the summer. However, for those hiking the TMB, it offers a few particular highlights:
- located about 3 minutes off the TMB route through the southern half of Les Contamines. Since it's already a bit below the center of town, you've got a few minutes head start in the AM
- they keep their ski room open and heated overnight, so all the guests were able to air out wet muddy clothes
- yummy breakfast bar in the morning (extra $ but worth it) with juice, granola, yogurt, boiled eggs, fresh pastries, and great variety of fresh fruit
- free wifi
- front desk staff speak both French and English
- small convenience store and patisserie across the street to pick up bread, snacks or cheese for the next day's hiking lunch

Rooms were basic but clean; bathrooms on the smaller side but a wonderfully hot shower. Our American credit card ran through their card reader without a hitch. All in all, a positive experience for these backpackers!

On the positive – the essentials are fine ie plenty of hot water, the bed is comfortable and the room is reasonable clean with a balcony. Breakfast is the usual continental one. There is an outdoor swimming pool.

On the negative – my room smelt musty. It had no window and I felt I needed to keep the door to the balcony shut at night and when out of the room. The bath is high and there is no hand rail to help with getting in and out for a shower. The walls are very thin and most nights I was woken by noisy people in the car park/street even though I had the balcony door shut. The evening meals over the week were disappointing with virtually no vegetables or salad. Some of the glass and crockery is chipped and needs to be replaced.

At reception only the female receptionist was welcoming and helpful. Wifi only works in reception which is annoying.

The swimming pool is fenced from the garden but the paving round it is broken, wobbly and uneven. There is no indication of the depth of the pool. Some paving stones on the entrance steps to the hotel are broken.

My room had a modern style with brown laminate flooring, brown net curtains, brown curtains, dark grey ceiling and imitation fur bedcover, cushions and backs to chairs. I prefer a more traditional style and lighter look with carpet but others may prefer this modern style. Hall and stairs have carpet.

Room Tip: Facing the garden rather than the car park for a quieter room and better view.

I enjoyed a week at chalet chemenaz. Family run, clean, and convenient to many great hikes. Five course meals were fresh, lightly seasoned, creative and never too rich (except for the tartiflettes..a regional dish). Only critique: the white wine was not very chilled. Very comfortable public areas inside and out.

The food was not very good the cheese once even made me sick and the wifi was bad good walks from there overall disappointed. And nobody was at the counter most of the time. They was sitting with customers trying to get them to buy more drinks!

Room Tip: Not a family room!!!!!!

Another super family run hotel we stayed in whilst on the TMB. Room had balcony, small ensuite, and whilst the decor was dated, it felt as if it would be getting an upgrade soon (restaurant and downstairs reception areas are very plush).
Breakfast was brilliant, exactly what you want when doing a big hike.
Nice garden area with a pool which has seen better days, but for pure cool factor i.e. after a hot long hike, was super.
Service in the restaurant needs a bit more work as when full we were left waiting for 30 mins between courses/ interactions with the wait staff.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the pool, as the front side of the hotel can get quite busy with arrivals...

La Chemenaz was our 'treat' for 2 nights as we trekked as a family of 5 around the TMB. Comfortable rooms, friendly staff and friendly proprietors. It was very nice...
There is a nice pool and a lovely terrace to sit out on, the food is very good - indeed exceptional for 'set' hotel food.
We might return to ski.....
