“perfetct location, staff not really nice”
Reviewed January 17, 2012

I spend 10 days in the dorm, the bed is not really conf but is cheap and clean and good wifi. The location is great, just i front of the beach, the receptions staff are really friendly but not the morning Bar staff, they are rude. Probably they not like the morning shift.
Unfortunately the Bar close at 6 pm so this place don't have a area to socialize in the evening .

Room Tip: bring earplugs for sleeping

We never thought a remote beach in the Oaxaca coast could house such a charming posada. We stayed in the "Ebano" hut, where you feel in real contact with nature. Decorated with good taste, clean and clear, spacious and with a great value/money ratio.

The staff was generous and helpful, they let us scratch some time from the next day because we were coming back a bit late from a trip in a boat.

We definitely recommend the Posada to spend countless days on the seaside.

I spent 10 days here and loved almost every minute. Mazunte is a great hippy-vibe little village, and the hotel is right on Playa Rinconcito. The architecture is designed to blur the lines between inside and out, which means you have to be comfortable with close encounters with wildlife and jealously guard your food from ants, but if you like the outdoorsy life you're probably used to that anyway.
The first night was disappointing, we stayed in Ebano and had extremely loud neighbors upstairs who refused to turn down their music even after multiple complaints by ourselves and staff. Luckily they checked out the next day and we had no other annoying neighbors. Ebano is a sweet room, with a tree growing in the bathroom and another trunk as a backlit wall sculpture on the bedroom wall (which we couldn't figure out how to turn off at night..). Because of the vegetation there's not much breeze and you have to peer at the sea view between trees. I felt this room was a bit overpriced.
But the third day we got a chance to move to Cactus and this made up for everything that went before! You have a private entrance into what feels like a multi-level treehouse. The completely equipped kitchen has a sink and counter hewn out of rock and overlooking the expanse of the Pacific. The thatched dining patio gets a great breeze and offers 180 beach views. The living/sleeping area is very roomy, although the bed closest to the bathroom gets spray from the open window when it rains. Also, if you're tall and female you may feel like you're giving a peep show to the beachgoers below when you shower. One of the best features is the sun deck where you feel like you're in the crow's nest of an old-fashioned ship as you watch the fishermen bring in the daily catch (or the tourist boats disgorging their orange-vested cargo). This place truly felt like home while we were here.
There's a great restaurant across the street (Estrella Fugaz), but the noise can carry over to the hotel on occasion, this was especially true of their movie night.
All in all, while not perfect, this vacation was pretty damn close!

Room Tip: The Cactus suite is absolutely phenomenal! The Ebano suite, where we started out is OK, but costs th...

I stayed here for two nights with my girlfriend and it was great. The beach is blue clear, and is just in front of you the whole time. The cabanas are great, if you like to experience a rustic place. They all have bathrooms and showers thought, but is almost like having and outdoor experience. If you like the beach, the sun and heat humid weather, this place is great for you. Also if you don't mind having insects in your room, you will be fine.

Room Tip: Be prepared to have insect bites

So few truly gorgeous, unspoiled charming beaches left in the world. And Arquitecto is just the perfect private hideaway. The charming and so well kept cabanas are beyond expectations. All very white plaster walls and palm frond roofs. Huge Romantic (more or less unnecessary) mosquito nets. Gorgeous views of beach as far as the eye can see. The young Argentine chef produces world class gourmet dishes on only 2 burners (was expanding as we left). Fresh fish and crisp veggies. The staff goes beyond the usual to be helpful and accommodating. I am a U.S. expat living in Oaxaca (far inland) and will make Arquitecto my beach get-away from now on.

Room Tip: Our cabana at the top had the best view.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Posada del Arquitecto. It's situated right off the beach. The cabana we stayed in was amazing - designed (and apparently lived in) by an architect. Great coffee in the café, great yoga. A cool, backpacker vibe.

We arrived at this posada late and without a reservation and were told there was only one room left which cost 500 pesos (which later came down to 450) which sounded a lot. When I saw it I knew where that money was going. The room named Brisa is spectacular. It's not really a room but an instalation built into the hillside. In places it's totally open to the outside but with a shear cliff below so no one is going to break in. There are sweeping views across the beach, possibly the best view of any accomodation in Mazunte. This is the view you'll wake up to in the rope suspended bed. You can shower whilst looking out to sea. There's a hammock to swim in and your own private bathroom just outside the room.

I briefly met the Italian owner who seemed friendly. The guests at this place are generally a hippy/new age crowd, great if that's your bag, don't let it put you off staying here if it isn't!

The only negatives were that the wi fi signal did not reach our room and that the place is so popular we had to move out the next day at they were fully booked!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Posada del Arquitecto was born in the early 90s, when Mazunte was still a wild, virtually uninhabited beach. There were no access roads at that time. In 1989, Guido, the Architect, who was already familiar with this stretch of the Oaxacan coast, discovered an amazing spot lost in time, Mazunte, where he fell in love with this virgin beach and decided to build himself a house. Many friends from around the world wanted to visit this incredible place, and soon they began to show up. Inhabitable accommodations were required for their comfort. Thus began the evolution, almost spontaneously, of the Posada, starting with a few rustic palapas and cabanas that were built with local natural materials, experimenting with the principles of bio-architecture, while discovering, adapting, and developing the traditional construction techniques in this region - an entertaining and fascinating game for an architect. In 1997, Hurricane Paulina caused severe damage in this part of Mexico, destroying much of the Posada and necessitating repairs and reconstruction. The first cabanas were thus transformed into more solid, safe and comfortable structures, while preserving the minimalist style that utilizes the area's natural, living materials. The overgrown hill that was the setting for the Posada's earliest rustic palapas gradually became a garden. With the passage of time and the collaboration of old and new allies, the Posada del Arquitecto has become less spartan and much more comfortable, without losing the relaxed spirit of a big home where friends are always welcome. We keep striving to respect our surroundings, which is why the cabanas are built in harmony with the original natural elements of this place. Please help us to protect and preserve the living plants and animals you encounter during your stay. Today the Posada del Arquitecto offers its guests/friends a multifaceted experience, including yoga, massage, an impressive view of the bay from the cabanas, and free Wi-Fi connections. The beach is so close that the rhythm of breaking waves will become the soundtrack for your stay.We hope that you enjoy your time with us. ... more   less
