“Everything about it is just great”

We loved El Copal, we loved everything about it.
The reason why I picked this place was because of its environmentally friendliness (solar energy, composting toilets, local materials, etc), but we were very surprised as soon as we got there.

Our cabaña had a lovely view to the ocean, where we actually saw whales one morning. The rooms are clean, comfortable and very private. And the open air shower is pretty cool.
We also liked that the hotel is not situated _in_ the little town of Mazunte, which means that you're at once removed from the bustle and yet it's only a short walk to go into town.
The thing we loved the most about El Copal, though? The food and the staff. Their chef is a member of Slow Food and he plans the menu for each night, all really delicious. It's a fixed menu, but you can tell them your preferences (in our case vegetarian).
We just loved it, we want to go back every year.
Nadia, Karl and Lucía, thanks for a wonderful stay!

P.S. Bring cash, no credit card terminals at El Copal and no atms at Mazunte

For Thanksgiving my in laws, all 18 of them, and I went to El Copal. At first I was a little uneasy with the whole eco-friendly hotel idea since I have small children. As we arrived, all my fears were put to rest. What a beautiful place. The hotel itself is perfectly done and decorated in a simple yet traditional manner. I have never liked the mega hotel type of vacations and if that is what you are looking for, El Copal is not for you. If you are looking for a clean and refreshing vacation, with good food, many alternate daily outings, sprinkled with adventure and healthy fun, than this is paradise for you, your frineds and family! The young couple that own the hotel went above and beyond our expectations with a romantic bonfire on the beach, delicious meals, pre-trip advice and an ever-ready smile that demonstrated their passion and commitment to El Copal and its guests. As for the "Eco-friendlyness" of the hotel, it was good to see that you can have a good time while saving the planet and slightly feeling the difference. I highly recommend El Copal!

Here you can learn that not everything you are used to in a hotel is really necessary. Although some tricky to get there, once you arrive you will immediatly feel the relaxation this place brings. From the nicely appointed rooms (palapas) with amazing views, to the very good food offered you will not miss the aircondition and other commodities that are taken for given in other beach hotels.
Be prepared to relax and enjoy a unique experience.

My husband and I literally stumbled upon El Copal while looking for a place to stay in Mazunte. Although it was a little out of our price range for our month-long holiday, we were completely charmed and knew we couldn't resist staying here for a few days. The owners are extremely friendly and helpful and went beyond the normal call of duty as hoteliers, and their approach to low-impact living is an inspiration. (You even get solar powered flashlights for night time wandering.)
The 4 cabanas are tucked up onto a cliff (one with direct beach views) and each have their own outstanding private outdoor shower area, with locally produced toiletries, and a dry-toilet. You are provided with clean sheets and towels and daily cleaning service. Although there is no electricity in the room, you are supplied with candles and other details such as a hammock, natural mosquito repellent and netting, and incense. The main house is basically a huge terrace where breakfast and dinner are served plus a space just to laze the day away in hammocks looking out over the beach. The breakfast is a nice change from usual Mexican fare offering yoghurt, fruits, and locally-made granola plus the usual things. For dinner, you have the option to eat on the gorgeous terrace with sunset views or walk over the hill to the town of Mazunte to enjoy a multitude of fantastic eating and drinking options. In between, drinks are available.
And what to say about the beach, it's simply stunning. Wide, mostly desolate, with good body-surfing waves and if you're lucky like we were, whales and other creatures jumping around. We only saw a handful of people since most people stay on the other side of the hill. And it's one of the only places to watch the sunset in the area, the other being a 15 minute hike up the backside of El Copal to Punta Cometa, which is highly recommended.
No good review goes with out critique so I will point out that if you're looking for a pampering holiday, this is probably not your place. There are no hot water, spa, or room services. (And certainly no TV's or phones.) And with no screens or bars on the windows, they tend to be shut whenever you're out or sleeping. (Can get a little stale in the room.) But you open your double doors and take in the breeze and the greenery and happiness takes over. Over all, we absolutely loved our time here. It was peaceful and breathtakingly beautiful and although I would not necessarily call it luxurious, it was the perfect mix of romance, nature, and relaxation on our backpacking trip through Mexico.

El copal is amazing! It is on a almost desert playa: the only inhabitants are crabs, pelicans and gulls. Behind the playa, plants and only another house. Moreover the hotel is pretty small (4 cabanas), thus you'll probably be the only one on this big marvellous playa. There isn't coral reef, thus the ocean isn't like a mill pond, but you can play in the waves, it isn't dangerous.
The cabanas are really nice, absolutely clean (much more than usual, in Mexico) and with a small patio with a great see view (from green and red cabanas there is a view, not sure about the others). Over the main room of each cabana, there is a second one, with two single beds.
When we arrived, our plans were to stay there only one night, but after half an hour, we decided to stay there more. It was such a great place!
Keep in mind that, due to the position, it DOESN'T HAVE ELECTRICITY (they're building solar power plant, but so far there's light only in the restaurant) OR SEWER. The wc, which is private but outside the room, is an ecological dry wc. They'll explain you how it works, anyway don't worry: it's clean and it doesn't smell at all.
Also the shower and the sink are outside the room, as you can see from my pics, but they are private. Water is chilly, but we didn't have any problems with that: the wheather was so good...
The restaurant is open for breakfast and dinner. Bring something with you for lunch, 'cause the town is 10 minutes from the hotel and you probably won't want to leave the playa.
It is much more expensive (650 pesos<50$ with breakfast) than other hotels in Mazunte but it's worth the money! Other hotels in the town looked pretty old/dirty and the playa of the town it's not to be compared.

Beautifull sunset, incredible terrace - beautifull sight of the sunset. Romantic cabanas with outdoor shower with sea-view => unbelievable!
Clean - good food and a very nice host-couple. Can recommend it to all who want to have a quite stay without lots of tourists.
PS: During the wale season, you can see some just from the restaurant terrace...!!!

El Copal is a wonderful hotel owned by a super friendly young family. Even tough we usually don't pay as much for an accommodation it was totally worth it. The breakfast buffet is rich and soooo good. The village Mazunte is a 10 minutes walk away but the beach infront of the hotel is less touristy and beautiful. Sometimes you can even see wales. From our room we could see the sunset every night...
