During our ten day stay in beautiful San Agustinillo my girlfriend and I teamed up with another couple and Daniel (our guide) for a trip down a local river canyon. For us it was a great way to see some of the local country (other than the coast) as well as find another way to creatively have some fun during our vacation. The day started with some coffee and sweet bread as we shuttled up to the foothills of the Sierra Madre. Daniel was a great guide all along introducing us to the lay of the land, noting local ecology (birds and trees) and describing the communities we passed through. The river itself was beautiful and the water was clean and refreshing after swimming in the ocean all week. The sculpted rocks and boulders were reminiscent of some of my home rivers in the Green Mountains but with a tropical feel. Fun cliff jumps and bouldering above deep pools were highlights for me. Daniel has an infectious enthusiasm and we were smiles all day long. The trip was not overly technical nor was it overly easy - it was just a fun thing to do as part of our overall great week in the Agustinillo area. Basically -who doesn't want to walk, swim, float, and jump into a beautiful wild river!? Oh yeah besides just being really personable and fun to be around we appreciated that Daniel spoke English well (as our Spanish needs work) and found it fun that he had spent a number of years as a guide in the states and knew some of our favorite spots including our current home in Colorado. Whether rafting during the wet season or canyon hiking during the dry season you won't regret spending some time with Ola Verde.
