“Fantastic Hotel”
Reviewed September 29, 2013

Fantastic hotel with great food and staff, great location in the little village of Winchelsea across from the local church.Room was a good size with a very comfortable bed and good decor, well thought out modern shower room & WC.Varied menu of great food ( don't order to much as portions are on the large size ) at good price, cosy large log fire. Only stayed 1 night as we were on a walking holiday but will be back next year for a weekend break.

Room Tip: Room at back of hotel over kitchen with no nasty smells

Winchelsea is a beautiful, unspoilt, small village and this hotel and restaurant is at its centre. The restaurant is quite atmospheric and intimate. The food is excellent; the service good and the bill reasonable.

Sadly we did not notice the delightful garden until we were leaving.

Came in for a drink and maybe a bite to eat on a very hot day. Only one person serving at the bar; had to wait several minutes not to get any attention, only to find that he then served someone who came to the bar after me. He noticed my irritation and said something a little patronising about having acknowledged me and would be serving me. Frankly I was in a bit of a hurry and so left to get something in Rye as the New Inn unfortunately has a monopoly in Winchelsea. Just didn't strike me a very welcoming place and so I'd endorse the disappointment of an earlier reviewer.

Thank you for your feedback and I'm sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your visit to the New Inn. It is not clear what time of the day you visited or, indeed, which day so it is difficult to respond specifically. During what we expect to be quieter periods it is not uncommon for there to be one member of staff - conversely during busy periods staff will be serving many customers around the building and grounds. At all times, we endeavour to serve people as quickly and politely as we can and, as most previous reviewers concur, the service we provide is most often complimented. It would be nice to have ample staff serving constantly but as a small business in economically hard times (despite our Winchelsea monopoly!) we staff to the best of our ability. I can understand your disgruntlement if you were in a hurry and offer our apologies for not satisfying you on this occasion.

We have come to Winchelsea on our summer holiday for the last couple of years and found this year that the New Inn is even better under new ownership. We ate dinner there 3 times and really enjoyed the food on each occasion.

We also found them to be very accommodating of children's fussy food fads. Main courses would arrive within 15-20 minutes of ordering which is perfect for us.

The garden provides lots of running around space for kids although there are no climbing frames, swings etc.

Excellent relaxing break at the New Inn. Friendly, helpful staff. Lovely room with bed and seating area. Beautiful garden to relax in. We were there on quiz night which was great fun. Extensive drinks and food menu. We had the local Rye scallops which were superb and followed it with a succulent, tasty steak...so tasty we didn't need any sauce!!!
The village is very peaceful and pretty. Our room overlooked the church. A perfect stay would definitely recommend this place!!

Excellent weekend break, ideally located for nearby Rye, Hastings etc. Rooms tastefully decorated, spacious and comfortable, all recently renovated. Food very good infact we ate there both nights during our 2 night stay. Friendly and welcoming hosts. Overall excellent value for money and will definately go back and recommend to all our friends. One not to miss !

Room Tip: Superior rooms are worth the little bit extra for the added space.

My girlfriend and I booked a room for one night at the New Inn (Tuesday 30 April 2103) and had a marvellous stay. We had been allocated a newly refurbished room (the whole accommodation appears to have been recently renovated to a high standard which gets over the past criticisms) looking out to the church yard (my thanks to Bunny022 for the warning about the double deckers).

The staff is absolutely brilliant – extremely professional, friendly and this includes but not limited to:
• The owner’s son and his colleagues who gave restaurant service that would be a credit to a 5* establishment without the obsequiousness that one can find in such places

• The marvellous lady who was cleaning in the morning and was a mind of information on the village and its environs.

The evening restaurant food is not cheap but comes back to the adage “that you pay for what you get”. I believe we got extremely good value for money.

The “full English” breakfast was a delight. Cooked to perfection and just the right amount to set you up for a good walk on Winchelsea Beach.
