“Very Charming”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 13, 2013

We stayed here with our 3 kids in October for 2 nights and enjoyed it very much. As we took the tunnel to get to the UK the Strand House was in easy access from Folkstone, not even 1 hour. We wanted to stay somewhere close to the beach as we like walking around a bit. So ideal located. We booked dinner for our night of arrival. The kids got their dinner a bit in advance in the lounge, which was very delicous. So when our dinner was served the kids were already in bed and watching some TV. So my husband and I had a nice dinner for ourselves. The "restaurant" was well booked. The food was good.
While I made the booking I already asked for a birthday cake for our oldest son on sunday. He turned 10. When we came down for breakfast a wonderful cake was placed on our table, with candles and everything. Really nice and he was so happy as he didn't expected anything.

We enjoyed it very much. Just book in advance for the weekends.

If you want to stay in a small family run hotel which is more like a private house, this is the place.

Hugh & Mary who own the "Strand House" have a saying........."this is our house, this is your house", and that's just what it feels like. It is so difficult to reproduce the family atmosphere, especially at Christmas, but they manage this with apparent ease. Nothing is too much trouble, and the food is of the highest standard. The joy of spending Christmas in such a relaxed atmosphere, without the "washing up" afterwards, is a real treat.

This is the second visit we have made to their house, and it certainly won't be the last!

Room Tip: Rye Cottage offers 3 rooms, which are more modern, in a cottage 20 yards from the main house; the St...

I booked the hotel for my husbands 60th birthday. Our family and friends agreed that the food service and house were second to none. Mary chooses fresh local produce and turns them into the most delicious menus. Nothing is too much trouble for Mary and her staff. The rooms have the most comfortable beds and beautiful furnishings. A wonderful stay.

A note for Brides to be let Mary guide you through your wedding day. You will not be disappointed A truly magical house for such a magical day.

Room Tip: If you love old quirky steeped in history houses this is for you. A room with a view the battle suit...

Strand House was very picture perfect from the outside and there was a great sense of history within the room with low ceiling and beams etc. Friendly and efficient service. A nice place to stay. I've given this 3 stars as I was a little disappointed with some aspects of the stay and felt it was over priced for what was actually delivered. The central heating was switched off around 11pm and the room rapidly cooled. It was put on again in the morning but switched off around 10am when check out was at 11am so again was quite cold (I don't think we should have been expected to go and find someone to get it switched on at that time of night). Sitting room area could do with some attention. Breakfast was nice but nothing special. I was expecting more for what was charged but it was nice to have a stay in such a beautiful old building.

Warm reception, easy living, fantastic breakfast, in this characterful old small hotel. Good choice of teas etc in the nice beamed room - the layout of such an ancient place was quirky, which translates into a very small shower room which was a bit hard to get into (step up over a beam and slightly sideways to get in). Good hot shower though. Other: nice Green King pub 5 minutes' walk away in the middle of Winchelsea with good food a cut above most pub food, good choice of wines by the glass (the NZ Sauvignon Blanc I had you would not usually get outside a decent wine bar). Worth looking round the old houses of Winchelsea, huge church (sized for the town it used to be!) with excellent 1920s stained glass windows...and Spike Milligan's grave (with Gaelic inscription translating as - "I told you I was ill").Walking away from the town towards the castle is a local produce place where I bought freshly caught dabs and quinces - how often do you see quinces on sale! Waitrose, eat your heart out!

Room Tip: If you have a movement disability you need to check which room you get (see note on shower room abov...

Professionally run by friendly staff, the house is centuries old so of course low ceilings on a slant and beams are de rigeur, so if, like me, you are on the tall side, this may not be the place for you (I learned to walk with a stoop after a bit of head banging). There's quite a small window for breakfast, but the staff are genuinely accommodating and you can see the effort they put in. It's all terribly bijou, from the heart-shaped shortbread in the tin (which is delicious) to the teddy in a dressing gown propped up on the bed (why?) but judging by their guest book comments, it's the hospitality that keeps their customers coming back.

If you like beams, wonky staircases and sloping ceilings (& cats!) then you'll love the Strand House. The hotel is full of character and everything was extremely clean but it was not built to accommodate en-suite rooms - our shower room was tiny with smallest cubicle ever! Like Alex Polizzi, I don't see the point of towels being on the bed, along with cute little teddy bears and the house cat! We stayed 2 nights and took dinner on the second which was very good. The food was local, fresh and tasty but such a shame that we had to have it when we were told to at a set time and which we had to pre-select at breakfast! I can fully understand why my fellow reviewers of this hotel have made glowing comments because a wedding demands organisation, a set meal of high quality and a photographic venue and all of these would be easily delivered by the hosts but on an out of season weekend break from the City I don't want to be organised.

Room Tip: Be aware of sloping ceilings and very wonky staircases and small doorways throughout.
