We have been here five times before, and it never disappoints. Mary and Hugh take great pains to ensure a welcome and keep Strand House a welcoming and friendly environment. Do ignore complaints about beams - that is all very much part of the charm. We keep coming back not least for Mary and Hugh's attention to detail, the comfort (the beds give a wonderful night's sleep) and the excellent food, but the knowledge that the high standard set will be maintained. Oh, and we love the bear...

Strand House is full of character and a delightful bolt hole. If you want bedrooms of bland uniformity then this is not the place for you. Bedrooms and bathrooms vary in size which reflect the historic nature of the property which dates from the fourteenth and fifteenth century. While each room is different however, all are delightful.
Mary and her staff create a friendly, warm and relaxed atmosphere while maintaining their attention to detail and look after their guests to perfection. We booked at the very last minute (on the morning of our visit) and were warned that the only room that was available for two nights was small and under the eaves. This was true and we were glad to have been warned. It was however very cosy. The beds were very comfortable, the mini shower room supplied with decent sized white towels and White Company products and the tea tray included home made shortbread cookies. We were entirely happy. Mary was relaxed and warm, helpful, friendly and efficient even though she had a full house. Breakfasts were superb and included the best of local ingredients, dinner was elegant and delicious and nothing was too much trouble. The sitting room was a charming and comfortable space in which to hang out. Altogether delightful. We look forward to a return visit.

My wife and I decided to get out of London for a long weekend and the Strand House was recommended in a well known guide book as a place that welcomed dogs, which is important to us. We also checked on Trip Advisor to see what the reviews had to say. We arrived early afternoon and Mary welcomed us with great charm and showed us to the room (The Inglenook). Yes, the ceilings are low. Yes, the bathroom was not much bigger than a cupboard, but the place is just packed with charm and is so comfortable. Mary and Hugh have obviously worked very hard to create a wonderful atmosphere and such friendly service. The honesty bar is properly stocked, there are interesting books lying around if you need something to read, and the breakfast was just delicious and plentiful. Overall, I departed feeling that I was leaving some friends who I would be back to see as soon as I could, rather than leaving a B&B that I had no real intention of going back to. Other B&B/hotel operators, big and small, could learn a lot from a stay here and visitors will keep on going back because places like this are rare and should be supported with full rooms and repeat bookings. We are really looking forward to going back,

Room Tip: "Inglenook" room is at rear and on ground floor, so has less noise from road, higher ceili...

I stayed here in March 2011 to celebrate my 40th Birthday with some friends. Mary, Hugh and Kevin couldn't be more helpful and accommodating. The welcome was wonderful and the rooms very well appointed and charming steeped in history. Bathrooms are a little small but that is all part of the glorious charm. Rooms all have beams so tall people watch your heads, but being quite short not an issue for me. Bed was really comfy and all my friends found their rooms just as lovely as we did. Arrangements for my birthday were planned in advance and there was excellent flexibility in the menu. Food is superb and varied and I wish I could eat there every day it was that good. The staff offer a real personal touch and the whole experience was one of relaxation and decadence. Information for the local area was readily available and you can walk to Rye in about an hour at a slow pace and back and it's not too strenuous to do so! I found the hotel as my sister got married there and I was so enamored by it, it was the natural choice for my celebrations. I'd highly recommend this hotel

Room Tip: Friends and I stayed in the Master, Winchelsea and Tudor Room and all are absolutely gorgeous!

We have just spent a lovely and romantic weekend at the Strand House, Winchelsea. The rooms are lovely and quaint, the staff are friendly and hospitable. The ambience is restful, calm and inviting. The food was excellent and all locally sourced, cooked fresh to order. Highly recommended.

If you're looking for an historical building, typically english and close to the charming city of Rye, just stay at the Strand House. Nice rooms, original details and a wonderful english breakfast. We stayed in the Marsh room, very nice but the bathroom (let's say shower room) was very small) We visited for the Rye bonfire, a wonderful experience with a nice firecork and great atmosphere.

A stunning location in the country down by the South Coast in Winchelsea. The place is very well preserved and the rooms are just stunning. Breakfast is also extremely tasty. Only comment is the other guests are all a bit old - not that you have to spend time with them. It is a great location to explore the coastal towns like Rye. However, make sure you aren't stuck in Winchelsea as the whole villiage seems to close down around 9pm!

Room Tip: Big choice of rooms but go for the Tudor if you want extreme quality!
