We booked the afternoon tea some weeks beforehand and despite looking forward to enjoying the experience in beautiful surroundings the whole experience was disappointing from the start. Whilst the staff were very kind and efficient, we were seated in the reception area as we were told the beautiful lounge was being cleared, so missed out on the roaring fire and more sumptuous surroundings. My champagne was delicious and my tee total friend served coca cola. However, the tea was disappointing. The sandwiches were good, but not very many and somewhat plain and uninspiring; the scones were overcooked and dry - thank heavens for the plentiful jam and clotted cream. The cakes appeared to be shop bought and disappointing in look and taste. The balance was all wrong, too much sweet and not enough savoury. It just wasn't special enough to warrant a return visit sadly, especially if you are looking for a luxurious treat.
