I go to the abbey whenever I can and alone if possible! It is a stunning piece of architecture and in an unexpected place. I have been to the Duomo in Milan and Selby Abbey is just as dear to my heart. My daughter loves it too. There are refreshments available, toilets and a cracking little gift shop.

“Beautiful”
Reviewed August 12, 2013

we stopped here on our way to visit friends. A beautiful church with a lot of history. There happened to be a wedding as we arrived and the church bells were ringing, which was lovely

Inside is a stained glass window honouring the George Washington family in USA.

“Simply Beautiful”
Reviewed August 12, 2013

I have never really appreciated the Abbey as i have lived in Selby for some time now. However, over the weekend I took time to photograph this marvellous building and found a new love and appreciaiton for it. It has spent that long under scaffolding, that i almost forgot what it looked like! The building has been transformed. This quiet old building has a tearoom and so that you can enjoy a quiet cup of coffee and absorb all that Selby Abbey is.

Beautiful building inside and out. Inside there is a very old Stars and Stripes flag that was presented by George Washington, I think

“Selby Abbey”

Over 950 years of history. If history and/or religion are for you then the Abbey is well worth the visit. In the heart of Selby, with free entry, take the time to view this great place. Suggest Monday for trips as this is also market day in the town. There is a small shop and a cafe serving very good food (coffee and cake a treat).
