Got to admit i am very biased toward Selby Abbey as i married my wife there in 2005. Its just a place i love to be,but dont get me wrong im not a god fearing religious man. Awesome architecture, awesome history and you can see the very first American flag in one of the stained glass windows!!! we visit approx half a dozen or so times per year and always enjoy being there. They also have a nice coffee shop and yum cakes :)

If you have never been to Selby, please pay a visit,if you go nowhere else in Selby then the Abbey is a must,it was built in 969 by the Benedictine monks who saw 3 swans sailing on the river & saw it as a sign to build a church, the coat of arms of Selby is of course the 3 swans. The first church was built on land known as Church Hill today, its directly behind the Abbey as we know it today.
It has associations with George Washington a president of the USA by way of a window know as the Washington window.
I was a guide at the Abbey for a while in the 1980's,I still live in Selby & visit the Abbey & has been said previously everyone connected with the day to day care of the Abbey are so helpful & knowledgeable.

I live in Selby so know the abbey quite well . It is a beautiful building picturesque and worthy of fetching your camera . The inside has some beautiful stained glass windows and the history of the building is interesting to read. The abbey holds lots of functions such as classical concerts to fashion shows. It has a little gift shop with a cafe in case you decide to have a peaceful cup of tea.

Working in Selby I always find time to spend lunchtime in the abbey, it has become my sanctuary. The cafe is nice as it is in the middle of the abbey. Alec and John the caretakers are always helpful. It is a very peaceful place to visit with an amazing history
