“Decent food in tourist area”
Reviewed August 6, 2014

A large group of us had dinner here in April, service was timely as they were busy that night.
A varied menu so plenty to choose from.Staff were friendly,we had booked tables with ocean view but we didn't get them due to a mixup however we didn't mind as we were having a family dinner and we were all in a great mood. The food was pretty decent, felt sorry for the staff they were so busy.

Stayed here for a night with family. Its a reall hidden gem around bushmills. Would recommend anyone to stay here when visiting the giants causeway etc. Big rooms, comfortable beds and lovely food. Not to mention the very friendly staff!

Booked for 7.45 ...not served until 8.30. Food acceptable, but £11 for burger and chips, and I mean burger and chips not acceptable Nice view got extra star. I am only rating the restaurant. Not the hotel as we did not stay there. Waiting staff looked under pressure. Perhaps they should increase their staff numbers.

We last stayed in the The Bayview Hotel in November 1991 - our first short break after getting married on 24 July that year. On that occasion it was homely but a little tired and in need of refurbishment so we decided to visit again for our 23rd Wedding Anniversary, staying overnight from 23-24 July. We booked in at the start of May and got a good deal on a Superior room on the first floor - it was spacious, modern, clean and comfortable with a large window and a balcony accessed by a patio door (which unfortunately didn't open despite someone being sent to fix it - the friendly receptionist apologised for this as we were checking out as she had been assured it had been sorted) with wonderful views of the bay at Portballintrea. Thankfully the window opened very wide as our stay coincided with two of the hottest days of the year (28C) in NI and the previous guests had left the radiators to come on full in the evening! We also had free wifi in our room - well done The Bayview - I am amazed at the number of hotels which still only have wifi within 10m of reception! There was also a docking station for my iPhone in the room - great news as I had forgotten my charger. I got up early the next morning to go for a walk down unto the beach and along to the harbour to take photographs - Portballintrea was looking its prettiest in the early morning sunshine with little sailing boats moored and the sea like a millpond. Breakfast was a pleasant surprise - we got window seats with great views and our cooked breakfast was ordered individually and served piping hot by smiling staff (I was expecting pre-cooked food and self service). The Bayview is a great base to visit the North Coast and Portballintrea has always been a favourite with me, having stayed round the corner from The Bayview in the early 70s in Jackson's guest house with my family.

Our room was a junior suite facing the beautiful cove and sea view, comfortable and adequately spacious (only gripe about room was lack of tissues and drawer space, plus the usual 'our guests steal our hangers so we make it difficult ' issue in hanging space). Reception was polite but perfunctory, and during our two night stay the two receptionists never looked up or greeted us when passing through (we called reception from our room once, got no reply, went downstairs and found the only one on duty playing with mobile phone). Restaurant is huge for a place this size (we didn't count but seemed to be some 40 tables) and the menu ambitious but the kitchen does not deliver, possibly because of the industrial scale. The restaurant staff are young and cheerful and obviously enjoy each other's company, but for the most part lack all finesse in delivering food or drinks to tables (the delivery on occasion bordered on the offensive in terms of plonking down glasses and a bottle on the edge of the table and rushing off, and food was similarly delivered - we had to suggest the wine list be removed from under the plate). Some of the food we enjoyed (fresh sea bass was nice), some we thought a bit second rate (venison sausages tasteless and drowned in huge quantities of gloopy gravy, penang chicken too hot even for my chilli addicted wife). Any deviations from menu were readily promised but never delivered - the kitchen just doesn't do personalised (noodles were asked for lightly cooked, and delivered very overcooked, chips promised instead of sauté potatoes but not delivered). Breakfasts good, run by delightful lady who was charming and helpful (it may have been her husband who was the only other member of staff who seemed to care about clients - he works in the bar). Not sure who chooses the background music but breakfast music classy and agreeable, dinner music the opposite.

Overall we recommend the accommodation but not the restaurant except for breakfast. Beautiful views from the hotel and monopoly of supply don't justify the formulaic approach and lack of charm, need to do better or exploitation of advantages could be short-lived.

Room Tip: front rooms essential to enjoy the view, but there is occasional night time noise from people leavin...

Stayed for one night on 23rd July . Spacious room, good size bathroom. Ate in restaurant which was very busy and so had to wait abit longer to get served but not really an issue except perhaps some extractor fans need to be fitted as it was very hot. Having said that it was unusually hot for the Antrim Coast! Enjoyed a drink outside watching the sun go down. Agree with other reviews that perhaps a few more smiles around the bar and restaurant wouldn't go amiss but as I said it really was a hot day and staff looked worn out. This whole area including Bushmills and Ballycastle is a much better place to stay than Portrush which continues to have a lack of quality accommodation and generally was quite sad. I will just have to relive childhood memories of it. A lot of work is required and people
will really have to get their act together if the Open golf is to come to it in several years time.

My husband and I stayed in room 202 at the Bayview on the 19th Jan 2014 as a 35th Wedding Anniversary present from our daughter. The room was lovely and very clean. The Jucuzzi bath was very relaxing. The view was fantastic, it was lovely looking out over the bay. Their food is first class. Good choice of food on the menus and the prices are very reasonable which explains why their restaurant is always packed. I would suggest booking as it's very popular. All the staff are very attentive and polite and they do everything they can to make your stay as comfortable as possible. We will definitely be booking here again and we have already recommended it to our friends and family. We went up the coast yesterday as it was such a beautiful day and on the way home we stopped at the Bayview for dinner. The restaurant was fully booked no surprise there but the girl squeezed us in between diners which we really appreciated. Once again the food didn't disappoint, high standards as usual. We both love the Bayview and can't wait for our next visit.

Room Tip: We were in room 202 which is one of the larger rooms with a separate seating area with a large bay w...
