Since when did a surcharge become a major talking point at a meal for seven in the Bayview Hotel?
That was the question posed after my wife and I along with five other family members found ourselves in during a farewell dinner for one of our party members earlier this month.
One of the diners has dietary issues and asked if the hotel could provide sausages and chips - not on the menu.
The waitress willingly obliged but when the bill arrived, there was a surcharge of £3.50p. making it £8.50p. in total. Apparently, the meal was classified as a child's option hence the increase. This was strange since we hadn't mentioned or sought a kiddies' menu - we simply asked for sausage and chips - nothing more nothing less.
We chose the Bayview for its comfort and what we thought would be good food.
While the staff were friendly and accommodating, the food was very average and a bottle of wine which was assigned to one of the special offers, was not produced until everyone had finished their food. Disappointing to say the least.
None of the party made any issues from the shortcomings and we simply paid up and left.
I cannot say any of us will be back for while decor and comfort may be admirable qualities, in the end it's the quality and general standard of food that counts most and the Bayview came up short in this respect.
Nevertheless, the hotel appeared to be doing brisk business on the night and I hope that continues. However, I would be very reluctant to recommend it to anyone - there are plenty of other eating establishments in the area to choose from.
