“Tidy Hideaway”
Reviewed August 17, 2012

A nice tidy little hotel hidden away from the main road, sitting almost on the banks of the River Spey, good spot to stop and explore the local area. Bed was far too hard for my liking and our room Glenfarclas) was quite small, but very well laid out with the space used quite well. We were welcomed warmly and settled in well. The staff are friendly and obliging - the food is excellent both at breakfast and at dinner. A tip, make sure that you book a table for dinner otherwise you could well be dissapointed and hungry as there are very few other options in this small town. Well worth a visit!

Room Tip: There are only five rooms - so booke early!

We stayed in The Mash Tun for one night whilst in the area for a weekend. The Mash Tun is an ideal location for walking along the River Spey, walking to Linn Falls and for visiting the Aberlour distillery.

The room was good, with a lovely view over the River Spey, although the angled ceiling (roof line) did make it feel less spacious than it was.

The breakfast was great and food in the pub was good too, although it does get busy, so booking is advised!

The staff were friendly and helpful.

Overall it was a nice stay and I would return; my wife has booked to return with her siblings later this year for a weekend.

Received a very warm welcome from the staff on our arrival, taken straight to the room Glenfarclas ( 2nights ), as described on the website, however, we were both pleasantly surprised.

We managed to secure a table for our party of four as the restaurant was busy on our arrival, food was excellent and well presented, friendly staff always at hand and very tentative.

On our final night we were moved to the Glenfarclas room at the top of the B&B at no extra cost, stunning views over the River Spey and a splendid Roll Top bath to soak in after a days walking.

Both Karen & Mark have a very pleasing manner and nothing is too much trouble, they have a fantastic knowledge of the area and where able to recommend various walks and places of interest for us to visit.

I cannot recommend the Mash Tun highly enough, if you're looking for somewhere with a Great Location, Friendly Staff and Great Food then look no further, you will not be disappointed.

Room Tip: Both rooms that we stayed in where excellent, however, we will be booking the Glenfarclas Room on ou...

This review is for the restaurant, we did not stay in the rooms.

The restaurant is hidden off the main road, towards the river. It is the only place to eat in Aberlour apart from the hotel up the road. At first the bar area seemed vibrant and friendly, but that is not reflected in the quality of the restaurant. However there is not a lot of choice in the village: the next restaurant is miles away by car.

On arrival at 7.40 we were told that there were no tables available, and the restaurant shut at 9pm - travelers beware - and the impression was that they did not want us there. When asked if a table would become available the response was very negative.

Fortunately a single diner overheard the strange negative conversation, and offered to let us join him, but also pointed out that the couple on the next table had just settled their bill. Indeed they left 5 minutes later, and other tables became free.

The menu was nothing special, (gammon pineapple and egg is very retro) although there were felafels with yoghurt . All the food was well cooked and nicely presented. The service was indifferent, even when ordering interesting speyside whiskies as a digestif.

I would have left after experiencing the unfriendliness of the staff, but we had walked from the B+B leaving the car a couple of miles away and did not fancy the walk back as well as a drive. The B+B owner had reassured us that there would easily be a table on a weekday night, and indeed there was. Just that the waitresses did not want to fill it. And there is no alternative in town.

Aberlour and this restaurant are to avoid. The renowned Scottish Welcome seems to fizzle out in Speyside, and especially here.

The mash Tun is a reasonable pub with a nice setting and Many Whiskeys to choose from. We ate there 3 times, and the food was good but expensive compared with others in Scotland eg the £21 steak was more like a £12 one. they do have a cheap steak day on Saturdays at £16 (round figures) I returned the hand-cut chips on day 1 as they tasted odd maybe what they were cooked in, but the normal chips were fine. The haggis and leek starter was delicious but very small.
