“Amazing location”
Reviewed April 28, 2011

We stayed for 3 nights for a wedding which took place on Good Friday. Everything about the weekend was perfect. The location was outstanding; I would put the view on a par with Ravello on the Amalfi coast. Our room was excellent, being one of the bay rooms overlooking the coast. The service was top drawer. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff. We had a 3 year old little boy in our group and the Head Waiter went out of his way to cater for his special dietary needs.
Ignore the comments about the hotel being 'tired'. Yes, it's a very old building and is being gradually modernised in the important areas such as the toilets but that is not to detract from the overall experience of a first rate and very friendly, accommodating hotel with great service, food, and of course, that view. We'll certainly go back there.

A very friendly hotel. Staff helpful without being obtrusive or over familiar This was our second stay and although the room was not of such ahigh standard as last time this was understandable as we had dogs with us. It was nice and large which was a bonus so overall no complaints on that count. The food was excellent with a comprehensive vegetarian option which is, I find unusual. Although not vegetarians we did enjoy meals from this menu.
The grounds are very pleasant with wonderful views from this cliff top location (therefore a little windy at times- a small price to pay!!!
Friends visited and were also impressed and enjoyed the atmosphere. the bar prices drinks/meals are very reasonable.
Overall a very pleasant break, I would recommend it and we will be returning!

Room Tip: Bay view rooms. Whitby and Scarbo'o nearby

We came across this hotel when my dad was looking for a venue for a conference he was organising. The conference didn't happen but despite this we decided to sample the hotel anyway.

There are many plus points to the hotel - the location is perfect to get away from it all with lovely views over Robin hoods Bay. The facilities are good and although the decor is a little dated this just adds to it's charm in my opinion. But the things that make this hotel special are the food and the staff. The set dinner was a bit steep at £28 but taken as part of a deal is actually very good value as you don't pay the full price. The food was first class and there was something for everyone and always of the highest quality. One night my mum who is a very fussy eater did not want anything on the menu (no reflection on the choice) and asked for an omellette and the chef was happy to oblige despite having a very busy dinner service. For the rest of us each dish was wonderful. I especially liked the chicken, chorizo and sweet potato starter. the breakfasts were a treat too with good quality bacon and sausages - although the fried eggs were a bit hard if you didn't catch a fresh batch.

The staff are fantastic and simply did everything possible to make our stay as comfortable as possible. Just the right blend of friendliness and professionalism as well as very efficient service. This is not some smart boutique hotel so don't expect that sort of thing - it is simply a warm welcoming friendly hotel with good food and great staff. We've now decided this will be an annual trip for our family and I'm looking forward to next year already.

Room Tip: Try the homemade short bread - delicious

The name 'country house hotel' might conjure up an upmarket and perhaps stuffy place, but this hotel is relaxed and friendly. If you want top grade corporate standard, this may not be the place for you. Its charm is the combination of the character of an old, slightly gothic house and a friendly hotel with lots to do. The location is imposing, with the main house perched high over the bay, surrounded by lovely lawned grounds and overlooking a stunning expanse of moorland rolling down to the sea. The views from the stone walls directly above the cliffs are spectacular- although the area is prone to sea frets, which can add their own drama.
The rooms vary. It's definitely worth the extra £10 per person for a bay view. The sea view is lovely, but the bay view gives you a panoramic vista across to Robin Hood's Bay. These rooms are also large. The hotel is gradually refurbishing all the rooms- they're all comfortable;some are a bit faded but clean ( really well serviced)and individual- you don't get that chain 'could be anywhere' feeling.
The restaurant is lovely. There is a really good value dinner menu- especially if you opt for the bed, breakfast, evening meal tariff, with a huge vegetarian choice and it's served by staff who couldn't be more helpful. If you can get a window seat, you can get the most incredible views and sunsets as you eat. The bar and lounge are comfortable and they serve at least one real ale.
You can join thr rail trail straight from the hotel gates- perfect for walking or cycling. There are other walks you can start from the front door- coastal paths, moorland walks, exploring the immediate area- we left the car in the car-park for two days and walked everywhere.
There's a 9 hole golf course. which benefits from the dramatic location; putting, crown bowls, croquet, a small indoor swimming pool and sauna,a games room, board games, tennis courts and the grounds to just relax in.
Best thing- value for money, location, views , some of the rooms, the food and the staff.
Worst thing- occasional blips in standards- e.g. sauna floor not cleaned properly.

Room Tip: get a bay view - some have 180 degree views.

Thought this was the hotel we stayed at on our honeymoon 33 years ago but it wasn't! Very good price for B&B on a Sunday night but there was a problem when I went to book over the pone as my husband is blind and we travel with his guide dog. I explained this over the phone as I like to warn the hotel first the receptionist said that there was a £5 charge for the night for the dog and we would have to stay in one of the 'dog accepted' rooms. I explained that there should not be a charge for the dog as he is a mobility aid and not a pet and she did drop the charge very quickly but we did notice that we were still put in a 'doggy room'. Fair enough as if she had not said about it we wouldn't have known anyway. The hotel has that slightly seedy run down feeling to it especially the restaurant which feels a bit like an upmarket old peoples home. It is very full dark wood furniture and also mixed with new modern furniture bit strange but ok for one night. The location right on the cliff top is magnificent and the views of Robin Hoods Bay is lovely, as are the gardens. The meal wasn't worth the money at all though as it was nice but expensive.

Stayed on a DB&B basis for 2 nights with special offer from hotelshopUk. Hotel is somewhat isolated in Ravenscar but on the other hand it's position offers tranquility and superb views of the coastline and it's grounds are very pleasant. The hotel is undergoing some refurbishment but like many hotels, much of the public areas are dated. The room we stayed in had been refurbished and was nice and clean, if a bit on the small side. The most notable aspect of our stay was the service. Everyone was polite, cheerful, helpful and efficient. The food was also excellent and drinks prices not too steep. The pool and spa weren't up to much though. Overall we enjoyed our stay and would definitely visit again.

We were booked in as part of a wedding party the hotel rang us to say the allocated room was not available so we were upgraded to one of the lodges the accomadition was first class with magnificent views over the bay towards Robin Hoods Bay. The lodges are very spacious, clean and comfortable, the food in the hotel was excellent and the staff were first class we would definitely return to the hotel.
