Stayed here as a birthday treat at the end of October 2012.

Could not recommend highly enough, great location, wonderful views out towards Scarborough and a rather nice breakfast - more than enough to set you up for a full day of walking, wandering and exploring the local area.

I prebooked flowers and champagne and they were very nicely presented in the room upon our arrival. Hostess was also very friendly and professional.

Room was of a good size and the ensuite was maintained to a very high standard.

I'd imagine in the summer you could enjoy a rather pleasant walk all the way to Robin Hoods Bay and back from the B&B... being October however it was a bit cold so we turned back half way!

Was a shame we only stayed for the 2 nights really, as I could've happily stayed a whole week.

Me and my partner came down to the East Coast for a few days away, and decided that Smugglers Rock was ideally placed between a few points of interest for us. We arrived and were greeted warmly by the owner who showed us up to our room, which was a good size, clean and had great views down the coastline. After we enquired about the best places to eat we were given a few good options, 'The Bryherstones' was our favorite by the way! Breakfasts were tasty and there was plenty of choice if you fancied anything different. Overall the whole place was well presented and in a cracking spot!

This guest house is more like a guest house in the country rather than a country house hotel. The breakfasts are excellent and the beverage provisions in the bedrooms likewise. The single beds suffer from too much plastic on the mattresses which leads to the body not being able to breathe and unpleasant smells. This is inappropriate for adults. The lounge is also smelly. Good airing would help to counter this in part and sensible mattresses not covered so body cant breathe. The single rooms we saw were poky and not pleasant. The attic bathroom would benefit from refurbishment. The location is excellent but the holiday was spoilt by these problems despite the excellent efforts with breakfast. The rooms however do contain small wardrobes and waffle bath robes.

Having communicated with this lady concerned after receiving this review, we were very disappointed that she did not raise any of these concerns whilst staying with us. Had she done so, we would have had the chance to deal with and recfity the issues raised.
* First of all, we are a bed and breakfast/guesthouse and not a hotel. We have never advertised ourselves as a hotel and feel that this lady's comments are unreasonable.
* We have water repellent mattress protectors on all beds - the reason for this is self explanatory. They can be removed and laundered or replaced quickly. Surely guests would prefer to know they are sleeping in a clean bed with a clean mattress protector rather than on a stained/dirty mattress.
* Our guest lounge has an open fireplace and is above a cellar, and the house is 150 years old. During the reviewer's stay, there had been a lot of heavy rain and so it is possible that there was a slight smell in the lounge due to the dampness. Notwithstanding this, the lounge is used on a regular basis and we do not have any problem with smells in that room.
* We are refurbishing the attic bathroom over the winter period. Of the rooms used by the reviewer, one is a newly refurbished single room and the other is a twin room - neither of which are poky and unpleasant!

I thought this place was great value for money. The accommodation was very clean and comfortable and the breakfast was lovely. It's a great place to explore places like Whitby, Scarborough and Robin Hood's Bay.

This review is based on a 1 night stay in July 2012.
Clean, well run place, with good sized room (6) with a view of the headlands in the distance.
Good breakfast. No evening restaurant but the Bryherstones Inn 4 miles down the road in Cloghton serves a good menu (best to book). Eight and a half mile round walk to the pretty Robin Hood bay area and the remains of Ravenscar are worth a look We would certainly stay here again if in the area and good value at £84/ night for two.

We have just returned from staying at cottage number 2 for a two night break on the 2nd/3rd June 2012. Booked last minute- what a find! Approx 8 miles from Scarbourough and Whiby, bit off the beaten track but in a superb setting. The views out the windows are fantastic. The cottages are very cosy, really clean and had everything you needed. The welcome pack was fab and well recieved (especially the bourbons by the girls). We took our chocolate labrador- Marley he loved it and the owners two dogs. We ate at the Hayburn Wyke inn on the first night( they allow dogs in), the steak and ale ie was amazing. On the 2nd night we ordered from a chinese takeaway, the Golden Dragon near Scarbourough which delivered to the cottage for an extra £3 ( left the menus with the owners ) All in all a lovely relaxing break- Thanks we will be back
